A diminutive workhorse

Compact and easy to transport, Zoom's LiveTrak L-8 digital mixer combines a wide range of features in a surprisingly powerful package. Featuring eight channels, it is perfectly suited to both podcast production and small band setups, and supports recording to either an internal SD card or via USB as an audio interface with 12 inputs and four outputs. The two recording paths can also be used simultaneously, allowing for parallel backups without complicating workflow. Additionally, features such as USB playback, built-in sound pads for effects and intros, and the option of battery operation make the LiveTrak L-8 adaptable to various recording situations and ensure ease of use at an excellent price.

Zoom LiveTrak L-8 Digital Mixer

Keep it simple!

The LiveTrak L-8 enables the recording of up to ten individual tracks as well as a stereo mix at 24 bit/96kHz, either to an SD card, a computer, or both simultaneously, providing flexibility in production and editing. Eight channels are available for this purpose, including six XLR/TRS combo sockets with the transparent-sounding Zoom preamps, as well as two channels with 6.3mm jack sockets for line and instrument signals. Each channel features a three-band EQ, a fader, a low-cut filter, a pan control, and an effects send, enabling consistent and convenient control across the entire mixer. Once a mix is set, the settings can be saved to one of seven available scenes for quick recall when needed.

For creators

The Zoom LiveTrak L-8 is primarily aimed at podcasters and musicians and boasts a flexible setup that works well for singer-songwriters or small acoustic sessions. Thanks to four available headphone outputs, each participant can monitor their own individual mix, which will prove equally useful for podcasts or interviews involving multiple people. Remote participants can also be integrated via a smartphone connection using the included TRRS cable, allowing calls or entire conversations to be recorded via services such as FaceTime or Skype, while the mix-minus function helps prevent feedback issues during these conversations. Six sound pads offer another useful feature, allowing intros, jingles, samples, or pre-recorded segments to be triggered in real time - perfect for streaming and live content production.

About Zoom

Founded in 1983, the Japanese company Zoom manufactures a variety of audio equipment, including a range of portable "handy" recorders as well as multi-effects processors, effects pedals, drum machines, and samplers. Over the past thirty years, the company has built a reputation for producing innovative yet affordable products based on original microchip designs. Since the Zoom-9002 (an ultra-compact multi-effects processor that can be attached to a guitar strap) was introduced in 1990, Zoom has become one of the leaders in digital audio processing.

Portable universal remedy

Zoom offers a product packed with features at an affordable price, with its portability being a particular standout. The compact and lightweight LiveTrak L-8 can run on mains power or on AA batteries for around 2.5 hours, and also supports USB power supply, allowing it to be used with a mobile phone charger cable or a power bank. This flexibility allows for recording virtually anywhere, making it particularly useful for podcasters or musicians on the go who need an all-in-one solution. Essential features such as 48V phantom power are also on board, providing a solid foundation for all essential requirements.

Absolutely great for what it does
CDStewArt 28.09.2020
I bought this to record a wide variety of voiceovers and musical instruments on battery power, but it has become my main audio interface for my Linux computer. It does everything that is advertised very well. I can record high-quality voice-overs on battery in a portable vocal booth. I can take it with me to record several instruments or mics out of a studio environment.
I think it really has no cons, with the slight exception of having only one USB port for both data and power, which I had to work around to use as my interface for Linux.
In short, if you are after a general and versatile recorder for voice, podcasts, instruments, small bands, etc, this has proven excellent for me.

Multifunction tool - does many things quite well
chrisrust 07.02.2023
I needed a mixer for small streaming/video gigs, including outdoor events with no AC power, plus a backup for my main PA mixer and a replacement for my Zoom L6 for small recording tasks.

It does everything I want but not as well as using more expensive specialist tools. Probably the best thing is the battery power, so it's very quick and easy to get out and set up at home or take to an outdoor event (I have some battery powered PA speakers). As a multitrack recorder it's pretty good and a very useful balance of functionality and portability, it's very compact for an 8-channel mixer. I've added an ART dual pre to make it a true 8 input microphone mixer.

But I would always use my Soundcraft ui24 digital mixer in preference if circumstances allow. The L-8 lacks any parametric EQ or compression, and no EQ on the outputs, the hybrid digital/analog controls are fiddly and require concentration, so it's not intuitive.

So not perfect but a wide range of useful functions, especially if you have good quality inputs that don't need much treatment

It is fine as a mixer, but unusable as a class compliant audio interface!
T. P. 16.03.2023
I've bought this mixer to route my external synths into the Maschine+ which is running in standalone mode.
According to the specifications, my decision was a no brainer.
- Possibility to operate with batteries for better portability
- 96kHz audio processing + audio effects
- class compliant audio interface mode
- recording feature with overdub!

More I used the mixer more I got disappointed.
Here's what I've find good, bad and terrible about this mixer.

Good:
Sound and build quality.
It works as a class compliant audio interface (Maschine+ recognizes it) (if you are interested in this please read the terrible part!)
More than enough monitoring outs.

Bad:
In 96kHz, you can only use the unit as a mixer (Recording in 96kHz might work too but I don't need it)
All rest of the functionality like ABC Mixes, effects and Audio Interface mode only work in 41kHz mode.

I've used the unit with Eneloop Ni-Mh batteries, it doesn't run for a long time, maybe 1 hour?
Alkaline surely lasts longer but who doesn't get bad conscience replacing alkaline batteries every 2 hours?

Overall handling of the device feels retro (but in a bad way). Some of the options like putting the unit into audio interface mode are not saved, so you have to put the unit into that mode every time you power it up.

Input channels 7 and 8 are shared with output 1/2 and 3/4 correspondingly, when used in audio interface mode. So you can not hear the output from the host, when you are recording from those channels.

Recording with overdub is definitely is not the overdub you know from DAWs, so don't expect it to work like a guitar looper.

Terrible:
Here comes the most annoying thing about this mixer (if you want to use it as a class compliant audio interface).
You can use the unit as a class compliant audio interface ONLY IF you power the unit with batteries!!!
As the unit wants you to unplug the usb cable befor switching into the class compliant mode.
Such a terrible design!
