Analogue feeling, digital versatility

The Tascam Model 12 is a true multi-talent. The feeling of mixing on an analogue console, the functionality of a digital mixing desk – all combined to make it a real audio all-rounder. The Model 12 can be used as a compact mixer, has a stand-alone multitrack recorder, works as a USB audio interface, and can also serve as a remote control for DAW software in the home studio. The Model 12 has eight ultra-HDDA preamps that deliver first-class, low-noise sound. But the Tascam Model 12 also has a lot of other practical features: The TRRS input for smartphones with mix-minus function, for example, or the separate output for a metronome click (the tempo of the click can be entered via the tap tempo button). And wherever the Tascam Model 12 is used, the wood-style side panels means it always look good.

From the first note to the final mix – and beyond

The Tascam Model 12 feels much like a compact analogue mixer, and one that's surprisingly easy to get to grips with: Just plug in mics and instruments, turn up the gain, pull up the faders and off it goes. But that's just the start of the journey with the Model 12 ! The internal recorder can record ten tracks (plus the sum signal), either to an SD card or, in USB interface mode, directly to the studio computer. In stand-alone mode, overdub recordings are also possible. Thanks to its incredible flexibility, the Model 12 is the perfect companion from the first take to the finished final mix. And even then, the Model 12 isn't done yet: With the one-button compressor, the insert point in the first two channels, the stereo subgroup and the master EQ section, the Tascam Model 12 also offers a range of really helpful functions for live performances.

For creating audio anywhere

The Tascam Model 12 is a kind of Swiss army knife for busy audio creatives. The wide range of functions and intuitive operation allow the Model 12 to be used in almost any setting where audio signals need to be processed: In project or home studios, rehearsal or conference rooms, live music and stand-up stages, YouTube or podcast studios, etc. With a single purchase, the Model 12 covers an extremely wide range of applications, making it just as interesting for beginners as it is for PA rental companies (having a flexible problem solver up your sleeve is always reassuring). It probably won't find a home in a fully-equipped professional recording studio, though, as the Model 12 only works up to a maximum of 48kHz and doesn't have an SPDIF interface.

About Tascam

Tascam started out in 1971 as Teac Corporation's distributor of professional audio equipment. The name is the acronym of Teac Audio System Company of America. Tascam was a great innovator on the market and pioneered leading technologies of the time, such as multitrack tape and cassette recorders, digital multitrack recorders (DTRS), digital mixing consoles, and so on. Today, Tascam supplies the entire sound industry with products for television and radio studios, recording studios, concert halls, conference rooms, academic institutions, commercial facilities, theatres, internet podcasters and broadcasters, music producers, and musicians.

Extreme versatility

As a mixer, recorder and interface, the Tascam Model 12 can, in principle, be used anywhere where eight analogue XLR inputs are sufficient. Two special applications can show the extreme flexibility of the Model 12: First, it can be used as an audio interface in a YouTube or podcast studio, where the TRRS input with mix-minus function makes integrating phone calls a breeze without annoying echo loops. If there's a lag between picture and sound during streaming, the output signal can be delayed by up to 2,000 milliseconds (requires the firmware update 1.2). On the other hand, with the Model 12, musicians and bands have the option of having playback tracks, including the output of a metronome signal, played back on a separate output via the SD recorder during a live gig.

Magic Mix
Stephen662 30.07.2020
'Brilliant build quality' was the first thing I said to myself as I popped the box. Having read the manual back to front many times whilst waiting on delivery, I found that in half an hour I had set up and ready to go - card formatted, click track working, synced to BFD3 and USB audio streaming out of BFD into a pair of channels.

All I can say is that Tascam have really nailed it with this one, and if they put MIDI etc on the 24 track it would be a truly pro workhorse. However, 10 track recording (and 2 master track) are adequate for my needs; primarily used out of my studio to record jam sessions with buddies.

If you want to get really picky then here's the dirt:

1/ Only two insert points (but appreciate the cost implications of putting them on all channels). I must say though a pair of master inserts would have been nice.

2/ Only 2 fx sends. Again a cost issue - also no dedicated simple returns. If you use the built in FX you are good to go, but if you patch in a box then you are going to lose 2 channels for a stereo return.

3/ Tascam must be the master if syncing to other gear or your DAW. Does not worry me.

EVERYTHING else is just brilliant and a lovely sounding machine it is. Tascam have a certain magic, especially with digital gear. Blindfold, you would swear it is analogue, but to be fair its better than that.

Conclusion, money well spent. Great value, simple to use, and all you need to do is RTFM :)

Class Compliant Great, But...
HDS Productions 15.07.2024
I purchased the Model 12 for two big reasons.

1. To use as class compliant gear with my MPC
2. To be a (dawless) home studio mixer and recorder

First, the Model 12 works very well with the MPC, being able to create separate tracks from the MPC and then mix each one before recording. I also loved the Tascam's ability to do overdub recording. However, when it came time to mix a couple of hardware synths and vocals for output, the unit's limitations became glaringly obvious. Vocals especially mixed very low, even with gain up to a maximum. In my opinion there is absolutely no way to create a completed recording with the Model 12 without a good deal of time and work in a DAW. While this may not be an issue for some, I personally just don't see the point with owning a mixer with such limitations when it comes to music production.

I think this is a good case for 'you get what you pay for', but ask yourself what your expectations and goals are, because apart from natural talent the gear you own and use needs to support where you are trying to get to. And, with that old adage; I did end up switching to an RME audio interface that costs twice as much, but is twice as much and more in superiority.

With that said, there are other audio interface options at lower price points that can do the job from manufacturers like Motu, Arturia and SSL to name a few.
