Zero-latency hardware inserts for the DAW

Despite the ever-increasing power of modern computers, genuine analogue hardware continues to play an important role in DAW-based production environments, offering not only a distinctive sonic character but also the tactile control and intuitive workflow that software alone cannot always replicate. Australian-Danish manufacturer Freqport is dedicated to seamlessly integrating analogue hardware into digital production systems, resulting in a range of innovative solutions designed specifically for this purpose. Among them is the FreqInOut FO1 (pronounced like "freakin' out"!), a multi-channel USB-C interface that provides simple, latency-free hardware insert paths directly within the DAW through plugin control. By operating independently of the main audio interface, valuable I/O resources remain available while eliminating the need for additional insert plug-ins. Once connected, external effects, pedalboards, and vintage outboard equipment can be incorporated into the production workflow as naturally as software plugins.

Small on the outside, big on the inside

Although understated in appearance and remarkably compact, the Freqport FreqInOut FO1 offers an impressive range of features beneath its minimalist exterior. High-quality ESS converters support resolutions of up to 32-bit/192kHz with a dynamic range of 116dB, while eight balanced jack connections, M/S mode, USB-C bus power and the option to cascade two units provide a flexible foundation for a wide variety of studio applications. Once connected via USB-C, the FreqInOut extends the main audio interface with dedicated hardware insert channels for integrating external effects, stompboxes, and outboard processors, with configuration and automatic latency compensation managed through a VST3/AU plug-in. Flexible routing options include 4x mono in/out, 2x stereo in/out, or a combination of 2x mono in/out and 1x stereo in/out, while compatible devices can also be daisy-chained using just a single ADDA conversion. An especially thoughtful addition is the ability to store smartphone photos of specific hardware settings directly in the plugin, so they can quickly be recalled as part of the relevant project.

The Freqport FreqInOut FO1 provides a practical solution for producers looking to integrate hardware outboard processors and effects into a DAW-based workflow without sacrificing valuable interface I/O. This is particularly beneficial in home and project studios, where high-quality converter channels are often limited and every available connection counts. Configuration via the accompanying plug-in is intuitive and uncomplicated, making day-to-day operation accessible not only to experienced users but also to beginners and occasional producers. A little attention is required when connecting unbalanced equipment to the TRS sockets, and the absence of XLR connectors should be taken into account when planning a studio setup. The option to cascade two FreqInOut FO1 units further enhances the system's flexibility, providing additional scope for expanding hardware-based production environments as requirements grow.

Hardware outboard in a DAW setup

The Freqport FreqInOut FO1 makes it easy for producers to integrate their favourite hardware equalisers, compressors, effects processors, and other outboard equipment into a DAW workflow, much like a traditional insert-based mixing environment. This allows classic analogue hardware to be incorporated seamlessly throughout the recording, mixing, and mastering stages, without adding unnecessary complexity to the signal path. Bus insert applications are particularly effective, offering a wide range of processing possibilities while keeping the overall hardware setup compact and efficient. The integrated M/S matrix proves especially valuable during mastering, although the FO1 is equally well suited to channel insert duties, recording applications and everyday mixing tasks. Re-amping is also fully supported, further extending the unit's versatility in both studio and production environments.
