Pro-grade bass made in Berlin

The HEDD Bass 12 is one of this high-end German manufacturer's active studio subwoofers. Equipped with a powerful 700W amplifier and – as the name suggests – a 12" driver, it's capable of reproducing audio across a frequency range of 20 to 200 Hz. This output makes it the ideal complement to HEDD's larger midfield monitors – the Type 20 (art no. 508495/508489) and Type 30 (art no. 508496). A DSP system is built into the subwoofer, including the proprietary Lineariser feature that newer HEDD models are known for. Its bass reflex port delivers deeper, fuller low‑end, although it can also be sealed with the removable plug that the woofer ships with, producing tighter, more focused lows.

Detailed signal, stunning dynamics

The AD/DA converters in the HEDD Bass 12 operate at a 96kHz sampling rate with a 32‑bit resolution, delivering a finely detailed signal and an immense dynamic range. The subwoofer can be fed with left‑right signals via its analogue XLR sockets; additional XLR sockets allow the audio to be passed on to two satellites. There's also a dedicated XLR socket configured as an input for processing digital AES stereo signals, with another acting as an output/through. The Bass 12 can achieves a sound pressure level of up to 115 dB SPL, and input levels, shelving filters, and the crossover frequency can all be adjusted individually.

For pros in project studios

For users of HEDD's MK2 range of studio monitors, the Bass 12 makes the ideal companion: Combining the units gives producers a 2.1 system that can reproduce extremely low frequencies – right down to 16Hz, provided the Bass Extension mode is activated on the subwoofer. Measuring roughly 60×38×61cm, the Bass 12 is reasonably compact, but at 32kg it still brings a respectable weight to the scales. Anyone running a project studio will find this subwoofer to be a pleasure to work with, with a powerful bass response and a wide range of adjustment options. Equally, home studio producers can use this unit to extend their existing Hedd MK2 speaker system to cover the low‑frequency range that they've been missing.

About HEDD

The family-owned company HEDD Audio was founded in 2015 in Berlin, where it still manufactures its high-quality studio monitors, subwoofers, and hi-fi speakers, as well as headphones – or HEDDphones. The name HEDD stands for Heinz ElectroDynamic Design, after its founder Klaus Heinz (who also founded ADAM Audio); his son, who himself has a PhD in musicology, is now CEO. The company’s R&D work is based on their decades of experience, and its mission is to deliver outstandingly detailed sound and optimum signal quality. A whole host of renowned DJs and mastering engineers, including DJ Jazzy Jeff and Sascha "Busy" Bühren, swear by HEDD products for their day-to-day work.

Made for midfield monitoring

Especially for producers mixing Pop, EDM, House, and similar genres, the HEDD Bass 12 offers previously inaudible insight into how a mix will translate onto nightclub systems with powerful low‑end reproduction. To get the absolutely optimal performance out of the subwoofer and its satellites, HEDD have made it possible to linearise the phase response of the components involved via DSP. This results in particularly punchy low frequencies and yet, simultaneously, an even more precise reproduction of mids and highs. The Bass 12 also features an offset control that can be used to compensate for time‑alignment differences caused by the distance between speakers: This makes it perfect for setting up a midfield monitoring system in larger recording spaces, because it enables a wider stereo spread than is typically possible in smaller studios.
