The Genelec 7380 APM is a subwoofer designed to deliver powerful, transparent bass in the control room. The rear panel features a wide range of analogue and digital connections, along with various adjustment options for seamless integration into virtually any setup. In addition to XLR inputs and outputs and an AES/EBU connection, the subwoofer also features a network port, allowing comprehensive configuration for stereo and multichannel systems via the Genelec Loudspeaker Manager (GLM) software. Sonically, the Genelec 7380 APM delivers clean bass reproduction down to an impressive 16Hz, all with very low distortion. These features combine to make the subwoofer a professional solution for modern studios, particularly in multichannel audio production.
This subwoofer is fitted with a 15" low-frequency driver, which is housed in Genelec's specially developed Laminar Spiral Enclosure (LSE) bass-reflex cabinet. It reproduces frequencies from 16 up to 120Hz, and is powered by a Class D amplifier delivering 800W. An electronic system protects the driver against overload and short circuits, and the amplifier against thermal overload. A maximum sound pressure level of 119dB SPL can be achieved. Seven analogue XLR inputs and outputs are located at the rear of the device. The sum of the connected signals can be output via a Link Out, while the subwoofer signal itself can be passed on via an LFE Out. Settings such as crossover slope, phase, and signal gain can be carried out directly using the DIP switches.
The Genelec 7380 AP is aimed at professional studio operators seeking an effective subwoofer for their audio productions. Thanks to its SAM (Smart Active Monitor) DSP system, the subwoofer can automatically calibrate itself to the room's acoustic conditions, intelligently adjusting frequency response, level, and phase alignment for perfectly optimised sound in the control room. An optional measurement system is required for calibration, which can be carried out using either the Genelec GLM Kit or the Genelec 9320 Reference Monitor Controller. The software also allows Intelligent Signal Sensing to be enabled, reducing power consumption to just 0.5W in standby mode. Despite its weight of 69kg, the elegant cabinet design featuring two integrated support bars makes the subwoofer easy to transport.
The SAM system ("Smart Active Monitor") is a technology developed by the Finnish manufacturer Genelec. It enables speakers to be adapted almost fully automatically to the acoustic characteristics of a room. This is achieved using the GLM speaker software, a Genelec measurement microphone, and the corresponding computer interface, all of which are available together as a set (article no. 357055). An integrated DSP solution within the SAM monitors ensures that acoustic issues are compensated for, and the system automatically applies the appropriate frequency adjustment, while also allowing the listening position and speaker alignment to be optimised. Up to 30 monitors and subwoofers can be connected, adapted to the room, and matched to each other, and multiple settings can also be created and recalled for different listening positions.
Since low-frequency vibrations significantly affect room acoustics, careful placement of the subwoofer in the control room is essential, especially for models capable of reproducing frequencies as low as 19Hz. For optimum performance, the distance between the Genelec 7380 AP driver and the front wall should be less than 0.6 metres. Placing a carpet underneath the subwoofer helps absorb room vibrations. Using the manufacturer's GLM software, the frequency response should be adjusted to be as linear as possible. If further improvements in the frequency response's linearity are required, it may help to shift the subwoofer slightly to the left or right. Accurate placement can be achieved using the 85Hz test tone.
