The DP155 BK is a perennial favourite in DiMarzio's product range and has been part of their portfolio since 1991. This passive humbucker was designed as a bridge pickup; it operates using AlNiCo-5 magnets and provides an exceptionally high resistance of 17.31kOhm. However, it's not one of the models with a maximized output level. This makes it an all-rounder for the rock genre, suitable for both rhythm and solo playing. Josh Rand from Stone Sour, for instance, uses this model. In keeping with DiMarzio tradition, the DP155 comes with four connection cables for splitting or parallel wiring.
One of the most important features of this passive pickup is its strong – albeit not extreme – output level, which it achieves while remaining highly dynamic. It's this dynamic range that allows users to fine-tune the volume and, consequently, the distortion of the amplifier. Played in the intended bridge position, the model provides sufficient definition and attack for precise rhythmic playing. At the same time, it delivers the necessary richness when picking individual strings, even in the higher registers. The use of AlNiCo-5 magnets prevents harsh sounds. The DP155 has a range of different connectivity options thanks to its four connecting cables, including a great sounding single-coil mode that uses the device's individual coils.
The Tone Zone provides a solid foundation for bass and low midrange frequencies, thus enhancing solos played in high registers with a rich low end, but also punching up chord strumming. Another of its positive qualities is the particularly dynamic playability and distinctive overtone response. DiMarzio achieves this with its patented 'Dual Resonance Coils'. In a nutshell, the technology is as follows: there are two spools with an identical number of windings, but different wire thicknesses. This results in notably different resonance frequencies. At the same time, the Tone Zone offers an impressive single-coil sound in split mode.
The company's later founder and eponym, Larry DiMarzio, constructed the first replacement pickup for electric guitars in 1972. Since then, the New York-based manufacturer DiMarzio has become one of the biggest producers in this sector. It offers musicians a wide range of pickups and accessories for guitars and basses alike. To this end, DiMarzio cooperates closely with renowned artists such as Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Steve Lukather, Paul Gilbert, Steve Morse, Billy Sheehan, and manufacturers such as Ibanez and Music Man.
The Tone Zone pickups are true all-rounders for rock guitarists. This powerful humbucker delivers a rich, balanced sound with impressive dynamics. At the same time, it conserves the original tone of the instrument and its construction. However, the passive and splittable pickup is only available for the bridge position. The DP155 BK is entirely black and is designed for guitars with the typical Gibson string spacing. In addition to the standard humbucker format, Tone Zone products are available in a range of other configurations. These include single-coil dimensions for Strats and Teles, Soapbar/P90 dimensions, and formats suitable for seven-string guitars. DiMarzio recommends pairing this product with the Air Norton, PAF Joe, or PAF Pro models in the neck position.
