Six-track portable recorder

The Zoom H5 Studio is a compact recorder designed for capturing up to six tracks, with four from its variety of inputs plus a separate stereo mix-down of all sources. Zoom's interchangeable microphone system gives users access to many different, flexible recording setups: Included with the unit is an XY microphone capsule for detailed stereo recordings. The two XLR-TRS combo inputs and a stereo line input provide additional options for connecting external sources. Its 32-bit floating-point technology allows recordings to be made without distortion, so there's no need for careful signal level adjustments beforehand, with all levels remaining easy to monitor via the built-in display. Look-ahead limiters help prevent overloads before clipping occurs, and effective RF shielding reduces interference from smartphones and Wi-Fi routers, creating a dependable solution for clean and consistent recordings in a wide range of situations.

For 32-bit float recordings

The XY microphone capsule of the Zoom H5 Studio uses 19.4mm microphones capable of handling sound pressure levels of up to 140dB, while the two XLR-TRS combo inputs equipped with F-series preamps deliver clear recordings with a dynamic range of 132dB and minimal noise. Recording is possible at sampling rates of up to 192kHz in 32-bit float, 24-bit and 16-bit formats, and phantom power can also be activated for the combo inputs when using condenser microphones. Each of the four channels can be adjusted individually using dedicated rotary controls, for a straightforward and flexible workflow during recording sessions. A 2" colour display positioned in the centre provides waveform visualisation for easier monitoring, while the lower section houses blue channel-selection buttons alongside transport controls for playback through either the built-in speaker or the headphone output.

Accessible all-rounder

The Zoom H5 Studio has been designed for a broad range of recording applications, making it suitable for different studio and field scenarios – including the capture of full live performances via the XLR inputs if connected to a mixing desk. Recordings are saved onto microSD cards, with support for both microSDHC and microSDXC formats offering capacities of up to two TB, which allows for extended recording sessions without frequent media changes. Accessibility is also ensured through the audio playback of menu items in seven different languages, improving usability in varied environments. Power comes either from four AA batteries (not included), via USB, or through the separately available Zoom AD-17 mains adapter, which is also part of the Zoom APH-5s accessory pack, together with a fur windscreen and a carrying case.

About Zoom

Founded in 1983, the Japanese company Zoom manufactures a variety of audio equipment, including a range of portable "handy" recorders as well as multi-effects processors, effects pedals, drum machines, and samplers. Over the past thirty years, the company has built a reputation for producing innovative yet affordable products based on original microchip designs. Since the Zoom-9002 (an ultra-compact multi-effects processor that can be attached to a guitar strap) was introduced in 1990, Zoom has become one of the leaders in digital audio processing.

Innovative uses with computers and cameras

When the Zoom H5 Studio is connected to a computer via an optional USB-C cable, recording can be captured simultaneously on the computer and on an inserted microSD card; in this way, the signal from the XY microphone capsule can be streamed live directly to the internet. A range of interchangeable microphone capsules is available for more specialised recording needs, including models such as the Zoom SSH-6, designed for more directional capture – particularly useful in interview situations. The stereo output can also be routed through the 3.5mm line-out to a video camera, supporting synchronised audio and video recording workflows. For on-set monitoring, playback is possible through the built-in 250mW speaker, allowing all participants to quickly review the recorded material.
