Warwick has been one of Germany's top electric bass specialists for decades – and that expertise really comes through in the Warwick RockBass Corvette Basic 4 Medium Scale Black. This four-string medium scale bass has a scale length of 813mm (32") and is part of Warwick’s RockBass series, which offers quality instruments with real Warwick DNA at an affordable price. Medium scale basses strike a sweet spot between long scale and short scale designs: They deliver a warm, full-bodied tone with clear attack and an articulate low-end response. The Corvette's signature body shape is still on show here – the long upper horn keeps the bass balanced on its strap, while the shorter lower horn gives bassists of all shapes and sizes easy access all the way up the neck. Other classic Warwick touches include the two-piece bridge and the four sealed tuning machines. The Corvette Medium Scale comes in a sleek, high-gloss black finish – and to keep that shine protected, it ships with a matching gigbag.
The Warwick RockBass Corvette Basic 4 Medium Scale Black is built around a two-piece alder body and a multi-laminate maple neck with ekanga stringers. The fingerboard is made from tigerstripe ebony, a visually striking wood that used to be rather overlooked in favour of traditional jet-black ebony, even though it offers the same tonal qualities – and has a beautiful natural grain to boot. For that classic J-style sound, the Corvette is fitted with two active MEC single-coil pickups. A balance knob lets musicians fine-tune the blend between them, while the active 2-band EQ gives them precise control over bass and treble – so the tone can be shaped to suit virtually any style. There's also a master volume knob to round out the controls. Both the pickups and electronics are active, powered by a 9V battery housed in the copper-shielded electronics compartment.
A medium scale length is quite unusual, even considering the variety available nowadays. In principle, it means the fret spacing is a bit tighter and the string tension is slightly lower than on a full scale bass. At the same time, the strings are still long enough to deliver a clear, defined tone – even on the low E string. All this makes the Warwick RockBass Corvette Basic 4 Medium Scale a great choice for smaller players (or bassists with smaller hands) who still want a firm, articulate sound or like to experiment with down-tuning. For very small hands (or as an instrument suitable for younger players) Warwick also has a range of short scale models, which offer even closer fret spacing. Remember, since it’s an active bass, it runs on a 9V battery – although they last a while, it's wise to keep a spare on hand.
Based in Markneukirchen, Saxony, Warwick, initially a manufacturer of premium basses, is known today for providing a wide range of music equipment in all sectors of the industry. The product range extends from bass guitars, bass amplifiers and cabinets (in all price brackets), bass strings and accessories, to effects units. In addition to this core business, the Warwick Distribution sales company offers almost everything that bass players, whether of four, six or even more string instruments, could require. Among them are the instruments of the Framus brand, which are remarkable for their consistently high quality. In addition to its headquarters in Markneukirchen, Warwick also has locations in Nashville and Shanghai.
The Warwick RockBass Corvette Basic 4 Medium Scale is something of a wolf in sheep's clothing: While Warwick has built its reputation in heavier genres like Rock and Metal, the Corvette can do a lot more than just growl. Thanks to its flexible electronics and high-end tonewoods, it's equally happy laying down classic Blues grooves or purring through vintage Soul lines. This isn't to say it's not capable of more modern tones, because the active 2-band EQ lets players shape their sound with precision – be it for punchy slap sounds or tight funky grooves. All in all, this medium scale bass is a fully-featured workhorse, flexible and powerful enough for all kinds of musical settings.
