38 microphones in one

The Universal Audio Sphere DLX is a modelling microphone capable of reproducing the tonal characteristics of 38 classic microphones of varying architectures, including renowned studio standards and rare vintage models like the Neumann U47 and AKG C12. Users can fine-tune key parameters, such as polar pattern settings, even during post-production. The Sphere DLX offers the unique capability to blend the tonal characteristics of two different models and naturally minimise unwanted acoustic reflections. Unlike the more compact Sphere LX model, the Universal Audio Sphere DLX also supports stereo recording, providing greater flexibility in multi-mic setups. The included Y-cable simply connects to the two microphone inputs of an audio interface, unlocking its full potential.

Renowned low-latency monitoring

As a modelling microphone, the Universal Audio Sphere DLX works in tandem with its dedicated Sphere plugin, which applies advanced DSP processing to shape the capsule's response and achieve the characteristics of vintage microphones. When paired with a Universal Audio Apollo interface, the modelling process is entirely handled by the DSP engine, virtually eliminating latency and CPU load on the system. Additionally, the Sphere DLX is compatible with any audio interface featuring two microphone inputs with phantom power. In such setups, the Sphere plugin can be accessed as an effect within a DAW, utilising the host computer's processing power to apply the modelling effects in real time with minimal latency.

Versatile and professional

Offering an extensive collection of microphone emulations, the Universal Audio Sphere DLX specialises in capturing both vocals and instruments with equal precision. Whether in a professional recording studio or mobile recording environment, its low self-noise and excellent dynamic range deliver remarkable accuracy for both musical and spoken applications. Apollo interface users will also benefit from Unison-enabled preamp emulation, which includes highly realistic emulations of vintage hardware such as the Telefunken ELA M 251 and Neve 1073 preamp - an excellent addition for professional producers and engineers seeking further creative options without compromising performance in the studio.

About Universal Audio

Few manufacturers can draw upon a wealth of audio engineering experience comparable to that of Universal Audio. The company's founding father Bill Putnam, along with his friend Les Paul, have an admirable reputation as trend-setting music producers and developers of legendary analogue studio technology. Putnam recorded Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, and Sarah Vaughan, and was Duke Ellington's favourite sound engineer. He developed the famous 1176 Peak Limiter and distributed the Teletronix LA-2A level amplifier. This earned him a posthumous "Technical Grammy Award" in 2000. In 1999, Putnam's sons, Bill Putnam Jr. and James Putnam, re-founded Universal Audio, transferring their father's analogue vision and craftsmanship to the digital music world. Their product range includes audio interfaces, dedicated DSP farms, and a variety of plug-ins, as well as analogue hardware devices.

Precision and reliability

The Universal Audio Sphere DLX emulates a wide variety of microphone types, including large and small-diaphragm condensers, tube and solid-state models, dynamic microphones, and even ribbon microphones. The Dual Mode feature allows users to blend two different mic models, opening up a host of creative avenues and innovative recording techniques. Whether capturing vocals, instruments, or room ambience, the Sphere DLX ensures a highly detailed and natural sound reproduction. Thanks to its dual-diaphragm design, the microphone is also capable of advanced stereo recording techniques, offering a significant advantage over conventional single-diaphragm microphones.

Isosphere for extra performance

A standout feature of the Sphere plugin is Isosphere, designed to improve off-axis correction when recording inside portable vocal booths or using reflection filters such as the sE Reflexion Filter and Aston Halo. Isosphere compensates for sonic artefacts sometimes introduced by these acoustic treatments, enhancing clarity and natural tonality - an excellent choice for voice-over artists and home recording environments. Additionally, the Sphere DLX's dual-diaphragm architecture allows for accurate stereo capture when connected via the included Y-cable to two audio inputs. This enables classic stereo configurations such as XY and Mid-Side (M/S) techniques, providing precise control over stereo width and microphone placement, even after recording. Whether capturing grand pianos, drum overheads, or immersive room ambiance, the DLX delivers remarkable depth and realism in stereo applications, even in less-than-ideal acoustic spaces.

J
A microphone you got to have
Josh Rainbow 17.12.2024
I am a professional opera singer and have my own home recording using the universal audio Apollo x4 and Luna. I bought the DLX microphone first of all because the quality of UAD is amazing and second as a vocalist to have a good microphone that also gives me more options to choose from different high quality microphones through the UAD Plug In is just all I need. The quality and the default sound the microphone gives, without the app, is beautiful and very clear. It is well build as all the UAD products are. With the UAD Plug In you have a lot of microphone emulations to choose from and the plug in allows me to adjust everything what may have gone wrong during the recording. If the vocalist was too close or to far from the mic I can adjust that, and lots more. For this price, which is in the same price range as a Neumann U87, you have so much more including the U87. Most important is the quality, the material, and having so many mics to choose from. For people who have a home studio this may be a good choice, however, also the professional will surely love this microphone. I love it....

Great product - technology!
D/Max 04.02.2023
The construction of the Sphere Microphone is top quality. Without the modelling software the Sphere sounds neutral and clean. Some may say boring...
You can use the microphone with the Apollo Unison stereo pre-amp or with any other outboard stereo pre-amp. The cleaner your preamp settings - the more you will hear the modelling differences once the plugins are switched on. To me, the best way to use the Sphere is to record vocals/instruments without the modelling plugins.
Record clean and then go through all the available microphone models at a later stage.
For vocals it is great to listen to the raw mix of your song and switch through the different mic models. You may end up with a SM57 for the verse vocals and U47 vor the chorus etc vocals. ...
Do the models sound like the originals? To my ears some models come very close to the originals. I hardly could tell the difference between my U67 Reissue and the U67 Sphere...
This is a convincing technology/product with a great future ahead.
Easy to carry around, great sounding and flexible.
