I was very skeptical of the Slate virtual anything, but after much research and reading decided to take a chance on the ML-1. Upon reception, I immediately put it to use in a complex session with huge stacks of vocals-- some instances up to 25 layered individual takes! Man, was I surprised with the result... The use case is clearly for the (advanced) studio musician / producer / recorder in the sense that you record "dry" vocals and can then switch between the mic emulations. While the original mike can have a tad of harshness in the top end, the models and of course use of further channel strips (EQ, comp, etc.) really make this a beautifully transparent, moldable and dynamic tool for vocal recording and production. The fact that I can run a lead stack through one mic, and backup / choir stacks through other mic models is really refreshing and provides tremendous opportunities for streamlining and accelerating my workflow. But he proof is in the hearing of the first recording: people hearing the song, a "welcome" lullaby for our first baby son, were deeply impressed and emoted, and could not believe I had recorded these lush vocal arrangements with my own voice! Since then, besides an SM7B and SM-7 for vocoder / dynamic mic work, all my other complex mic work whether it be acoustic guitar, vocals, and even certain types of percussion have consistely and accurately tracked with this baby. A while later, I also added the VSX and man, again was I blown away: I got all I need to record and monitor for a fraction of what any other professional alternative would cost!
