Fluent, warm and expressive

Sadowsky MetroExpress 21 Hybrid PJ 4 Fretless Black, bass guitar

The Sadowsky MetroExpress 21 Hybrid PJ 4 Fretless Black is, as the name suggests, a fretless version of the New York-based high-end bass manufacturer's Hybrid model. Hybrid here stands for the guitar's pair of passive pickups, with a P-style pickup at the neck and a noiseless J-style bridge pickup delivering everything from soft, singing tones to articulate bass riffs. This flexibility is perfectly complemented by the ability to use the instrument's push/pull bypass to switch between the renowned Sadowsky active 2-band preamp (for a modern, punchy sound) and passive mode, for a more vintage character. And with its resonant okoume body, roasted maple neck, and morado fingerboard – a tonewood with a very fine-pored structure for a particularly smooth playing feel – the fretless model couldn't be better suited to this setup: The Hybrid FL combines this fluent expressivity with the precision and reliability that makes Sadowsky basses so popular.

Comfort and control

The Sadowsky MetroExpress 21 Hybrid PJ 4 Fretless Black melds professional playability with a host of practical features. With its 12" fingerboard radius, 34" scale length, and 19mm string spacing, bassists will always feel they can handle the Hybrid naturally and intuitively, while still maintaining precise control over their slides and vibratos. The fretless morado fingerboard is extremely sensitive to dynamics and technique, with both fluent, singing lines and expressive glissando among its repertoire. Controls for volume, balance, treble, and bass mean players can dial in their signature tone at will, and the push/pull switch allows them to entirely bypass the preamp, for pure passive sounds whenever they're called for. The Just-A-Nut III nut keeps intonation precise, and the quick-release bridge makes string changes quick and easy; lightweight tuners, security locks, and a quick-access battery compartment make this bass ready for everyday use.

All about chemistry

This fretless Sadowsky is made for players who really want to put their own mark on their tone, expression, and dynamics. Jazz, Fusion, and Soul bassists will love the smooth transitions and organic slides, while studio musicians will appreciate its warm, vocal-like sound. The Sadowsky MetroExpress 21 Hybrid PJ 4 Fretless Black is less a beginner's bass, and more a musical toolkit for players with a good ear and a real feel for musicality: It's perfect for bassists looking to refine their playing style and take their band's chemistry to the next level – or for upright players making the move to electric. Thanks to its active 2-band EQ, though, the Hybrid is guaranteed to be flexible enough to cut through in modern or electronic setups, too.

About Sadowsky

For over 40 years, professional musicians have associated the name Sadowsky with high-end bass guitars, electric guitars, and archtop Jazz guitars. In the late 1970s, Roger Sadowsky opened his own workshop, where he started out repairing and modifying instruments from other brands. In the '80s, he began to develop bass guitars that represented his own unique vision: Soon, the name Sadowsky had a worldwide reputation for quality, thanks in part to prominent clients like Marcus Miller and Will Lee. Roger's legendary inventions include the on-board preamp for bass guitars, which helped create such extraordinary demand for Sadowsky instruments that he eventually made the decision to start producing the Metro line of basses in Japan. In 2019, the German bass specialist Warwick assumed manufacturing responsibilities for the Metro series, ensuring the name Sadowsky will continue to be synonymous with high-quality instruments for years to come.

Expression, not aggression

In the studio, the Sadowsky MetroExpress 21 Hybrid PJ 4 Fretless Black really comes into its own: It delivers clear, woody fundamentals with an almost vocal presence, making it ideal for Jazz, Soul, Ambient, or acoustic projects. On stage, it shines with its vibrant dynamics and a warm, punchy tone that slots effortlessly into any band setup. The flexible electronics let musicians fine-tune their sound to suit the room and the vibe, while the P/J pickup combo delivers both depth and definition. Paired with quality DI preamps, tube stacks, or recording interfaces, it becomes a versatile instrument for players chasing more than just punchy low end – it's all about the purity of musical expression.
