A benchmark in its price category

The Sire Marcus Miller V3 is a five-stringed J-style bass that, in this price category, has set a new benchmark in terms of quality and hardware. Visually, it's a classic J-bass with an Antique White finish but the V3 also comes with a whole host of modern extras, including an immensely flexible set of tone controls that gives bassists access to a broad palette of sounds. The result of a collaboration between Sire and bass legend Marcus Miller, this is a high-end, flexible instrument at a fantastic price, ideal both for ambitious beginners and more experienced players who are new to five-string basses.

Modern features, tonal variety

Mahogany body, maple neck, palisander fingerboard – Sire has gone for some really choice materials, considering the instrument's price. For the five-string models in this series, the neck has been reinforced with carbon fibre and the fingerboard has rolled edges for a more comfortable playing feel. This combination of woods, together with the Marcus Standard J-Revolution pickups, gives the instrument its warm, mid-rich tone – and the ingenious electronics expand its sonic capabilities even further. Even in passive mode, musicians can adjust the volume, balance, and tone control. By flipping the switch for active mode, the sound can be individualised even further thanks to the V3's three-band equaliser, and as well as controlling the highs and lows as usual, the frequency affected by the parametric midband can be dialled in at anywhere between 80Hz and 2kHz. What is more, the electronics' 18V operating voltage means there are always enough dynamics to play with.

A whole lotta bass

The Sire Marcus Miller V3 gives bassists on a budget plenty of instrument to play with, and the instrument's extraordinary flexibility means they can do a lot with it, too – almost every genre imaginable, from vintage to modern styles. It's especially well-suited to beginners and novices on a five-string, i.e. musicians who want to have as diverse a set of features as possible without comprimising on quality. The V3 is also an excellent choice for more experienced players looking to make the leap from a four-stringed bass, as it's an affordable way of getting a backup instrument that also represents an entry into the world of five strings. The warm, mid-rich tone will appeal to finger-style players in particular, but the active preamp is capable of altering the sound to suit practically every playing stylemaking the V3 an unbeatably affordable all-rounder.

About Sire

Sire, now based in California, was originally founded by a Korean guitar maker who had been successful in Asia since the late 90s. Since 2015, Sire has created a wide range of basses in collaboration with international superstar Marcus Miller, which combine modern versatility with classic looks and are hugely successful worldwide. In 2020, Sire’s range was expanded once more to include acoustic and electric guitars, this time in collaboration with Larry Carlton. Whether Marcus Miller basses or Larry Carlton guitars, Sire always delivers excellent quality in different price brackets.

Flexible sounds from Funk to Soul – and beyond

The Sire Marcus Miller V3 might be low in price, but thanks to its ingenious pickups and electronics, it's high on flexibility. There are almost no limits to the instrument's musical capabilities: For old-school sounds à la Motown, Soul, Blues, or Rock, it can simply be used as a passive bass. For all the more modern tones and techniques, on the other hand, the three-band equaliser provides more than enough options. The components are very high quality for this price category, which, along with the overall workmanship, makes the V3 a robust instrument for musicians who are on stage or in the studio day in and day out: With an operating voltage of 18V, the V3 functions virtually without distortion or interference, which is especially important when recording tracks.

Finally I got my bass guitar. I had to wait almost a month, but it was not in vain! I really liked the bass.
The first thing I want to note is the convenience. I play in a cover band, I have to give concerts for 1.5-2 hours. It is very important that the guitar is comfortable. I got this convenience to the fullest. This is especially true for the neck. Yes, the bass is a bit heavy, but not critical for me.
I also want to note the excellent quality. The bass is beautifully made. For a person who performs a lot in front of the audience, it is important that the bass looks attractive.
And of course I want to note the sound. It is very versatile, suitable for different styles of music. Thanks to the cool equalizer, you can always find the most suitable sound. It is very good that there is an active and passive mode switch. Do not hide the fact that the bass is also characterized by a favorable price. I can recommend this bass to both beginners and already experienced musicians, but who do not have great financial opportunities.
Of the minuses for me personally was a long delivery to Russia.

Very nice overall
egon73 18.02.2025
Bought this for a 80's cover band: I wanted a bass that could be as versatile as possible (thus the active circuitry) and I needed the extra B string. I'm not a bass player so I haven't played a lot of basses before (I had a Squier VM Jaguar).
Overall, I'm enjoying this bass: looks nice, feels nice (not much of nose diving, for exemple). I'd say it's really good for the price, I think it stands the comparison with much higher priced basses.
Where I think I'd like to improve it is in the electronics: right off the box the bass sounded ok (it just needed some fine tuning in neck and strings), but I'm not totally convinced by the passive tone control, I feel like it's not changing the sound as I'd like it to do: overall, the bass doesn't sound as brighter as I would like to go, even with the tone control on "10", maybe this is an attempt to make it sound "old school", I don't know. Of course, please consider this as a very minor "flaw". In regard of its price, the bass is really good. If you have the time and energy to upgrade the electronics (maybe also the pickups), it can become a WONDERFUL bass!

One of the best basses for the money
DenisSola 03.09.2021
As a guitar player i wanted to switch it up a bit with a bass. So a friend recommended me the sire. It had some minor finish things but nothing that important that would upset me.

The bass plays wonderfully and sounds great. Even compared it with a friends Fender which was quite more expensive than the sire and the sire held out quite well. Great instrument for the cash!
