Plenty of features, none of the frills
The M-Audio Keystation 49 MK3 is a straightforward entry-level 49-key MIDI keyboard designed for focused music making. Despite its very affordable price, it delivers a piano-style keyboard with velocity sensitivity, along with pitch and modulation wheels – plus arrow keys, transport controls, play, stop and record buttons, and a volume control that all make working with a DAW far more comfortable. Realising this core functionality, M-Audio has also included an array of software options, making this a compact production suite straight out of the box. At the same time, the device's onboard features are intentionally kept to a minimum, placing the spotlight firmly on the keys' playing feel and the expressive four octave layout.

The Keystation's keys are velocity-sensitive but unweighted, with spring-based resistance that produces a playing feel distinct from hammer action, which is entirely expected in this price range. A clear advantage of the design is the low overall weight, as the Keystation weighs just 2.1kg, so it's easy to transport when travelling. It connects directly to a computer and other devices via USB-MIDI, offering flexible integration into different environments. And because it's also powered entirely via USB, no additional cables are needed, keeping the setup clean, simple, and portable.

The Keystation is designed for pianists and synth players seeking a simple 49-key MIDI keyboard that delivers reliable performance while remaining affordable. Its low weight makes it a practical companion for smaller gigs and recording sessions, and at the same time it serves as an accessible entry point into the world of flexible MIDI controllers. With four full octaves, it offers ample range for composing and producing with a DAW, enabling an efficient and yet musical workflow. The M-Audio Keystation 49 MK3 also includes a fully-featured software bundle, starting with the renowned DAW Ableton Live Lite, and also including Mini Grand and Velvet from AIR Music Technology; Mini Grand offers seven expressive piano models and advanced resonance control, while Velvet recreates the unique sounds of five classic electric pianos from the 60s and 70s.

M-Audio is one of the best-known manufacturers of MIDI controllers, audio and MIDI interfaces, monitor speakers, and other studio equipment. Founded in 1988 under the name Midiman, the company quickly made a name for itself, always focusing on practical features and value for money. Flexible and effective
M-Audio has stripped away unnecessary features on the Keystation 49 MK3 and concentrated on what truly matters in a keyboard, namely the playing experience. At a very reasonable price, it provides a generous 49-key layout housed in a sturdy case that works just as well at home as on the move. Support for Apple's Camera Connection Kit allows the keyboard to control GarageBand on an iPad, adding flexibility for mobile setups. The comprehensive software package is rounded out with the beatmaking DAW MPC Beats, a 2GB Touch Loops sample library featuring over 500 sounds, and AIR Xpand!2, for creating unique multitimbral patches.
