Innovative dual-capsule microphone

The Lewitt DTP 640 REX, the flagship model of the company's DTP Percussion Series, is designed to capture the full impact and depth of kick drums and other low-frequency instruments. Its advanced dual-capsule design features both a dynamic and a condenser capsule within a single microphone - each with a dedicated output. This allows for extensive tonal shaping, enabling users to blend the attack and resonance of the kick drum with precision. Three switchable sound profiles and two attenuation pads further enhance its versatility for both studio and live applications. The Lewitt DTP 640 REX ships with its dedicated mic clip, a five-pin to dual three-pin XLR Y-cable, and an elegant black faux-leather carrying pouch, ensuring convenience and portability.

Two microphones in one

Housed in a rugged die-cast metal body, the Lewitt DTP 640 REX features two perfectly phase-aligned cardioid capsules. The large-diaphragm dynamic capsule captures the fast attack of the kick drum, while the small-diaphragm electret condenser capsule to captures its body resonance. The included Y-cable transmits the signals separately to the preamp, allowing independent processing and blending. With a sensitivity of 0.4mV/Pa for the dynamic capsule and 2mV/Pa for the condenser, the microphone delivers a high level of detail with minimal interference. Additionally, the Lewitt DTP 640 REX can handle extreme sound pressure levels up to 150dB SPL without distortion (using the -10dB and -20dB pads), delivering a well-defined sound even under the most demanding conditions.

In the studio or on stage

Designed for professional sound engineers and musicians, the DTP 640 REX is a versatile microphone that excels in both studio and live environments. Its dual capsules faithfully capture the complex character of kick drums, and its three selectable sound profiles provide added flexibility. In neutral mode, both capsules' signal is unprocessed and delivers natural response, while the "Dynamic EFR" mode enhances the attack frequencies between 3kHz and 5kHz, adding clarity and definition, and the "Dual EFR" mode boosts low-end frequencies between 70Hz and 150Hz, reinforcing the depth and resonance of the kick drum. The included mic clip ensures a rapid and straightforward setup, and its robust build guarantees long term intensive use, whether on the road or in the studio.

About Lewitt

Founded in Vienna in 2010, the midsize Austrian company Lewitt describes itself as the world's fastest-growing microphone brand, and indeed Lewitt has quickly made a name for itself among producers. The reason: The firm has a passionate team that produces remarkably transparent-sounding condenser microphones with low self-noise. Development takes place in Austria, but by producing the microphones in China, among other factors, Lewitt can offer its high-quality products at extremely low prices.

Fine-tuned tonal control

Each capsule of the Lewitt DTP 640 REX has a distinct role, and blending their outputs provides a wide range of tonal options that will suit any recording or live performance scenario. The dynamic capsule excels at delivering a punchy, tight kick sound with pronounced midrange, while the condenser capsule captures the resonant bass and fast transient attack of the drum skin. Further customisation is possible via the three profiles: Flat Mode provides a natural, balanced capture from both capsules, allowing engineers to blend signals to taste; Dynamic EFR Mode boosts low-end punch and high-end attack, ideal for live settings; and Dual EFR Mode applies distinct filtering to both capsules, isolating the low-end boom and high-end click, ensuring a mix-ready take straight from the microphone.

Nice, but heavy and somewhat quirky.

Got to use the single capsule version with a rental company I work for, and was very happy with the overall sound, so when the time came to add to the mic collection, I thought it'd be interesting to try the double capsule version.

In all, it's a nice looking, feature rich mic. All the adjustments you can make on the mic itself seriously impact the behavior and output, the results of which are more of taste thing then anything mechanical. So an easy 5 stars for Lewitt in the features department.

Some downsides, though: It's heavy. You need to take some time in making sure that the stand you're using is capable of keep the mic in the correct position, especially on a "bouncy" stage populated with very active musicians.

Even though the capsules are perfectly aligned to each other on the mic's body, there is a very, very slight delay offset between the two mics. It's minuscule, but audible when both capsules are in solo on reference monitors.

The soft case that comes with the mic is, oddly enough, nowhere near big enough for the relatively big mic and the somewhat bulky (and noticeably stiff) proprietary cable.

Sound-wise, it takes some time to get used to the sound of the mic in the mix. It's behavior is not exactly as the one capsule version. This is to be expected, and, for now, the main reason for giving it 3 stars in the sound department. This may change over the course of the next few gigs. Hopefully.

the perfect guitar cab mic happens to be a bassdrum mic
Dreetn 09.01.2025
slap this in front of your guitar cab, no more faze issues. Mix the 2 signals from the 640 to balance the overall sound. If needed add some taste with an extra 57 or 421, most likely you won't bother.

Micro Top, Zubehör Flop
Rexhe 16.10.2022
Das Mikro selbst ist Top. Super Sound, Top verarbeitet.
