Passive diaphragms instead of bass ports

The Focal Shape 50 is an active 2-way near-field monitor, designed around two Class AB amplifiers with a combined output of 85W RMS. It uses a 1" tweeter made from an aluminium-magnesium alloy alongside a 5" woofer with a lightweight yet rigid flax sandwich cone, which supports powerful low end and a natural, relaxed midrange. Covering a frequency range from 50Hz to 35kHz, it is capable of reaching a maximum sound pressure level of 106dB SPL. Instead of a traditional bass reflex design, it relies on two side-mounted double passive diaphragms, each 5" in diameter, helping to achieve a more defined and controlled bass response.

A wide range of settings

The Focal Shape 50 is equipped with both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA connectors, allowing it to meet professional studio standards while remaining fully compatible with hi-fi and consumer audio systems. Its low-frequency range, up to 250Hz, can be adjusted using a notch filter with up to ±6dB of cut or boost, while the lower midrange (up to 4.5kHz) and the treble can each be fine-tuned by ±3dB for more precise tonal shaping. The treble is managed via a shelf filter, whereas the midrange is controlled through a bell filter with a wide Q factor of Q=1, supporting broad yet natural adjustments. A selectable high-pass filter offers three cut-off options at 45Hz, 60Hz, and 90Hz, providing further flexibility depending on room setup and the specific sources. Alongside these extensive tuning options, an automatic standby function reduces power consumption to under 0.5W during inactivity, rounding off a feature set that is both practical and highly adaptable.

Passive diaphragm

Passive diaphragms are essentially woofer-like elements without a driver unit, used as an alternative to bass-reflex technology in speaker housings. In a bass-reflex system, the air mass inside the reflex port acts as a mass–spring system, whereas passive diaphragms resonate in phase with the active front-firing woofers, effectively supporting their output and extending low-frequency response. In a technical sense, they still function as bass-reflex resonators, although without an actual port opening. Unlike ported designs, they avoid issues such as airflow noise and port-related resonances, resulting in a cleaner low-end behaviour. They also allow for more precise tuning of the frequency response, while reducing the influence of cabinet resonances compared to traditional bass-reflex systems.

Upgraded from Focal Alpha 80s which were probably too big for my room. These speakers are more pleasant to work on in comparison, they don't go as low so when it comes to the low end but honestly I've not missed it. A very warm and natural sound that translates well - recommended for producers, these speakers are obviously not for mastering engineers.

HiFi look, Studio sound

If I have to choose one word to describe the sound of the Shape 50s its will be the word warm. I can listen this monitors hours with no fatigue. They work very well, even with low volume. I already made 5 mixes and all they translate well. The noise level is very low, almost identical to Yamaha HS50. Some people complain about auto standby, but it doesn't bother me. if you are in small room i strongly recommend using the monitors with the Low Shelf filter to -4db.

I was looking at studio monitors for my home studio which is situated in a small (about 10 m2) room. To keep the story short I bought these because of the passive radiators due to having to place them near the wall. I already know the room is a bit boomy and there really is no spare room for proper acoustic treatment, but the large bookcase behind me helps a bit. I already own a set of Focal Aria 926s for my HiFi which I was very happy with so I thought hey let's get them.

My experience in mixing is indeed limited and I am no sound expert. But my impression is the following. First of all, they sound great next to the wall with the low EQ set at -2dB. The sound overall is relatively flat but not so much that they sound completely boring. They sound natural, perhaps more natural than other competing speakers in this bracket. The highs are crisp yet sweet and controlled. The low end I would say is not their highlight but there is significant headroom for distortion-free listening. For me they excel at the midrange with significant clarity. This was surprising for me given the 2-way design and although I haven't mixed on them yet, by listening to reference material they feel like they're going to translate well particularly in the midrange.

I would say their soundstage is large for their size, just right for my taste. Their sweet spot is relatively wide with nice immersion when focused behind the head, but also good soundstage when focused a bit in front for more relaxed listening. You have to move VERY close them (like 30 cm) before the soundstage completely collapses and you hear the separation.

A minor drawback is they have a standby mode after 20 mins which cannot be overrided. This is an issue because the speakers power on on standby mode by default as well. So you have to raise your monitor controller volume until they come out of standby and then set it again to where you want. This can be a problem if you want to have your controller set for a particular listening level. For me this is a minor issue but this was a bad design choice to not be able to turn it off from the back. Another minor thing is that the EQ (low, mid, high) controls on the back are not notched anywhere not even in 0. Not a biggie but it would be nice if they were notched.

Overall I'm super happy with them I don't see how you can go wrong with these for the price.

very good speaker

very good speaker, i have also focal CMS 40. and comparing them to shape 50, shape 50 have a lot of clarity and bass but they sound unnatural. maybe i am used to the sound of cms40 but listing to a jazz concert I've attended the cms 40 sound was closer to the reality even if the shape have a lot more fine detail.
