It is different. And that is good!

I love the sound of drives that are based around discrete devices (no opamps). This is such a drive!
The sound is crisp, has a lot of attack and definition.

The Zoar has plenty of knobs to control the frequency response.
The 3-band EQ is based on Fender 1965 EQ's, meaning that it has a mid-scoop around 500Hz. I like mids, so I keep the mid knob at maximum.
I like highs even more, thus I push the highs.
And I balance out the bass to compensate for the effect of the pre-gain bass control labeled "weight".

The combination of the weight and gain control determine the amount of distortion and the distribution of the harmonics.

If you know what the knobs do, then operating is easy, I had found a good sound withing a few minutes. But knowing the function of the knobs is key. And that is the only reason why I did not give the Zoar a full 5 star review.

Unique

This pedal has a unique character that I love. I has a beautiful edge without muddying the articulation even when gain is topped. The weight knob is what sold me on this and it really defines the character of the clipping from edgy distortion to a low gain fuzz concentrated on low frequences. The 3 band passive EQ is the final touch, defining the frequency balance after the clipping. A really versatile pedal, also very good on bass guitar.
Really worth trying it on 12 & 18V, the character gets even more interesting. Experiment with all three voltages and choose what you like. I prefered 18 but they all sound good in their own way.
Also check the developer's demos, they are really good.

Real cool crunchy OD

Super responsive and versatile OD, in my opinion probably one of the best gain pedals you can get in this price range, also stacks super good with dirt pedals, I use this with an Walrus Eras and I get really heavy and dense fuzz tones stacking both pedals. Super solid construction as always.

Good pedal not my taste

Mostly an overdrive and with some twigs you can have a more fuzzy sound , not even close to a distortion
