Idles, the British post-punk band known for their raw, expansive guitar tones – from sprawling reverbs to heavy fuzz – has teamed up with EarthQuaker Devices to create guitarist Lee Kiernan's signature pedal: the Gary. Combining a modulation fuzz and an overdrive circuit inspired by the EarthQuaker Devices Gray Channel, Gary offers both dynamic grit and punch. The overdrive section delivers a responsive tone Kiernan often uses to drive the band's anthemic choruses, while the fuzz side focuses on envelope-filtered, broken fuzz textures that react to picking dynamics. For added control, the envelope fuzz sweep can be adjusted in real time via a TRS expression pedal.
Gary delivers a wide spectrum of overdrive and fuzz tones. Its overdrive channel is built around an op-amp circuit – at lower gain settings, it acts as a full-range boost, while turning up the Gain knob (labeled 'Go') produces a natural, punchy overdrive perfect for heavier styles. But as Lee Kiernan's signature pedal, Gary naturally has something special up its sleeve: an impulse-modulated, gated square-wave fuzz with exceptionally high output. What does that mean in practice? The fuzz behaves much like a synthesizer in its frequency response. With the 'Yes!' control turned down, it delivers a classic fuzz tone. As the 'Yes!' control is increased, the sound becomes more aggressive and unpredictable. By adjusting the sensitivity of the square wave fuzz's envelope, the pulse width is narrowed for a sharper, more nasal tone that gradually fades away as the knob is turned further. The envelope is highly dependent on the level of the incoming signal, which can be affected by any gain pedals in front of Gary, pickup strength, source instrument, etc.
The EarthQuaker Devices Gary Fuzz / Overdrive isn't just for Idles fans – it’s crafted for players who demand dynamic, hard-hitting overdrive and fuzz tones that cut through the mix and bring bold character to any performance. The overdrive channel pairs especially well with single-coil pickups, delivering a strong midrange presence. Given Lee Kiernan's preference for Fender Mustangs, which naturally have a thinner tone, Gary helps build a dense, powerful wall of sound. With the option to control the envelope filter via an expression pedal, it's easy to switch on the fly from massive, saturated riffs to sharp, gated fuzz textures that barely break through the mix. Both sides of the pedal complement each other perfectly, with the fuzz easily boosted by the overdrive for even more impact. Gary stands out as a far more flexible gain pedal than its stripped-down look might suggest.
EarthQuaker Devices was founded in 2004 by the musician Jamie Stillman, who had previously gathered years of experience in the world of music and sounds as the manager of a record label for metal, punk, and shoegaze bands. Today, his innovative pedal designs are among the most in-demand and desirable devices in the boutique segment, attracting interest from a huge community of musicians. Stillman is now in charge of a sizeable team of developers and technicians, who are continuously working from their base in Akron, Ohio to expand their catalogue of hand-made effects pedals. EarthQuaker Devices are used by renowned artists like Paul Simon, Coldplay, Tom Bukovac, Idles, and The Black Keys.
The EarthQuaker Gary, Lee Kiernan's signature pedal, combines a powerful overdrive with one of the most unpredictable and aggressive fuzz effects available today. Designed for players who aren't afraid to push boundaries, Gary delivers everything from tight, mid-forward drive to chaotic, synth-like fuzz textures. Equally at home on guitar or bass, this pedal cuts through any mix with authority. Built for bold tones and experimentation, Gary is all about raw energy and creative freedom. Powered by 9V DC at 20mA, it fits effortlessly into any standard pedalboard setup, ready for both stage and studio use.
