An all-rounder for the low end

The Audix D4 is a dynamic microphone with a hypercardioid pickup pattern, widely regarded as a low-end all-rounder across stage and studio applications. Its relatively balanced frequency response reproduces frequencies cleanly down to 40Hz, while the VLM diaphragm captures transients in a transparent and natural way. In practice, its range of applications extends from floor tom and kick drum through to bass guitar cabinets and low-frequency brass instruments. Its compact, robust aluminium housing – made in the Audix facility in Oregon like the rest of the D series – and high resistance to both sound pressure levels and feedback make it equally at home in demanding live environments and controlled studio sessions.

Mighty mic

The Audix D4 is certainly compact, yet it delivers a full, weighty sound with a frequency range spanning 40Hz to 18kHz. Combined with the natural response of the VLM diaphragm, this allows a variety of instruments to be captured in great detail. The balanced frequency response is gently shaped only in the upper mids – between around 2 and 5kHz – where a subtle presence boost helps bring out stick attack on toms without pushing the whole midrange forward. Its dimensions also make it straightforward to position on a tom or inside a kick drum, and wherever it's placed, the Audix D4 handles sound pressure levels of up to 144dB without distortion, even under aggressive drumming.

Value through versatility

The transparent signals captured by the Audix D4 feel both natural and easy to work with, largely thanks to its balanced frequency response. That balance extends into the midrange where it produces a warm, classic sound on kick drum – the kind of flavour that suits drummers and engineers who want character without heavy EQ correction. The D4's voicing is already well judged and immediately usable, which means the price reflects genuine engineering decisions rather than corner-cutting. For a dynamic mic in this price bracket, it holds its own convincingly against more expensive low-end all-rounders.

About Audix

Audix is a US microphone manufacturer which was founded in 1984. The small company has its headquarters in Wilsonville, Oregon and offers a wide selection of microphones – both for the recording studio and for live use. The range of products extends from instrument microphones, such as those from the well-known D series, to vocal microphones with complete wireless systems. The company’s remit goes beyond the music industry, however, since it also provides lavalier microphones, console microphones, and other devices for permanent installation. Audix also produces headphones and various microphone accessories, such as stands and XLR cables.

Convincing combinations

In live settings, the Audix D4's robust housing and compact size are particularly useful with closed kick drums, where permanent installation inside the shell is a realistic option. On a bass drum, the D4 delivers a natural sound with more emphasis on the midrange – essentially the opposite character to the D6. For more demanding studio recordings, combining the two microphones is a well-established approach: the D6 provides low end and attack from inside the kick, while the D4 at the front head contributes a more balanced overall tone. The D4 isn't limited to the drumkit and performs equally well on other percussion instruments such as cajon, djembe, or timpani – and retains its full-bodied character on bass amp speakers as well. The D4 is backed by Audix's five-year warranty.
