Plug-and-play punch

The Audix D6 kick‑drum microphone has long been the first choice for many drummers and sound engineers when they're aiming for a modern kick-drum sound with plenty of low‑end punch and attack. What they like is the D6's heavily contoured frequency response, which delivers a sound straight out of the box that other bass drum mics often only achieve after some fairly involved EQ work. Thanks to Audix's own VLM diaphragm, the transient response remains natural and well defined, too. All this makes the D6 is extremely easy to work with – it could easily be described as a plug‑and‑play microphone. But it's not just its simplicity that lets it shine both live and in studio situations: Its compact, robust aluminium housing – made in the Audix facility in Oregon like the rest of the D series – and high resistance to both sound pressure levels and feedback are equally important.

Solid straight out of the box

For a dynamic large‑diaphragm microphone, the Audix D6 seems surprisingly compact. Impressions can be deceiving though, as it actually delivers a rich, powerful sound, extending right down into the sub‑bass range. More specifically, it offers a frequency response from 30Hz to 15kHz: Within that range, the response features plenty of low end, a pronounced mid‑range dip around 700Hz, and a boost between 5 and 12kHz. This results in a transparent signal that cuts clean through the mix, without any of the boxy midrange often associated with kick-drum miking. The D6 doesn't overdo it with its heavily contoured frequency response, though, so engineers can EQ where needed. Its handy size also makes it easy to position inside a kick drum. Wherever it's placed, the microphone handles sound pressure levels well above 144dB without introducing distortion, even under aggressive playing.

Refreshingly uncomplicated

In many cases, the Audix D6 delivers exactly the kick‑drum sound the track requires without additional processing – plenty of low end, a noticeable dip in the midrange, and assertive attack, all coming across with great clarity. That suits drummers and sound engineers in Pop, Rock, and Metal who need a professional kick mic that works immediately in both recording and live contexts, without spending time on remedial EQ. For engineers running tight changeovers or working across multiple kits in a festival setting, the D6's consistency and predictability are as valuable as its punchy and modern character.

About Audix

Audix is a US microphone manufacturer which was founded in 1984. The small company has its headquarters in Wilsonville, Oregon and offers a wide selection of microphones – both for the recording studio and for live use. The range of products extends from instrument microphones, such as those from the well-known D series, to vocal microphones with complete wireless systems. The company's remit goes beyond the music industry, however, since it also provides lavalier microphones, console microphones, and other devices for permanent installation. Audix also produces headphones and various microphone accessories, such as stands and XLR cables.

Keep it clear when it gets loud

On kick drum, the Audix D6 delivers exactly the sound many modern productions call for. Thanks to its extended low-frequency response, it also produces convincing results on floor toms, bass guitar amps, or even Leslie speakers. In live situations, its low output level keeps high sound pressure levels under control, while the cardioid pickup pattern and 0.8 mV/Pa sensitivity combine for strong feedback resistance. Long cable runs and interference aren't an issue either, thanks to its transformerless circuitry and low‑impedance, balanced output. The D6's machined aluminium housing is built for the road, backed by Audix's five-year warranty.
