Straight out of the box
The Audix D2 is a dynamic microphone with a hypercardioid pickup pattern, developed primarily with rack toms in mind. Like the rest of the D series, it's built in the Audix facility in Oregon. Its strongly tailored frequency response delivers an effective drum sound with minimal corrective EQ work, while the VLM diaphragm keeps transient response natural and well defined. The result is a mic that works immediately in both live and studio settings – compact, robust aluminium housing, high resistance to elevated sound pressure levels and feedback, and a tight hypercardioid pattern with over 30dB of off-axis rejection that keeps bleed from neighbouring kit components under control.
Mighty mic
The Audix D2 might be compact, yet it delivers a full, weighty sound across a frequency range spanning 68Hz to 18kHz. Its response curve features a boost around 150Hz – where much of the body sits for rack toms and snare drums – combined with a dip between 500Hz and 1kHz and a subtle upper-mid presence lift. The result is a sound that feels transparent and modern, free of mid-range muddiness, and with a low-end punch and clarity that suits contemporary drum production styles. Its dimensions make it straightforward to position on a tom or snare; wherever it's placed, the D2 handles sound pressure levels of up to 144dB without distortion, even during aggressive sessions.
Clear and uncomplicated
In many scenarios, the Audix D2 delivers exactly the kind of modern rack tom sound expected in Pop, Rock, and Metal without EQ or adjustment – plenty of low end, slightly reduced mids, and an assertive attack with a clear, transparent character. Its consistent performance saves precious post-processing time in both live and studio contexts, a welcome feature for engineers running tight changeovers or multiple sessions concurrently. Sound techs and producers looking for a dynamic mic with a distinct sound signature that works predictably across different kits and rooms will find in the D2 a natural fit. Its voicing also pairs well with other percussion instruments, guitar and bass amps, as well as woodwind and brass, where its high SPL resistance works particularly well.
About Audix
Audix is a US microphone manufacturer which was founded in 1984. The small company has its headquarters in Wilsonville, Oregon and offers a wide selection of microphones – both for the recording studio and for live use. The range of products extends from instrument microphones, such as those from the well-known D series, to vocal microphones with complete wireless systems. The company’s remit goes beyond the music industry, however, since it also provides lavalier microphones, console microphones, and other devices for permanent installation. Audix also produces headphones and various microphone accessories, such as stands and XLR cables.
Suprisingly versatile
According to sound-engineering lore, while the D2 particularly shines on rack toms, it performs equally well on snare drums and congas. Its pronounced low-end punch is particularly suited to the full-bodied snare drum sound common to many modern Rock and Metal productions. On distorted guitar amps, the D2's bass and treble boost produces a scooped character that pairs particularly well with a mid-forward microphone such as the SM57 – together, the combination produces a dense, well-balanced frequency spread that neither mic achieves alone. The D2 also handles bass amps and brass instruments such as saxophone convincingly. The D2 is backed by Audix's five-year warranty.
