Compact USB controller and sequencer

Arturia Keystep 37 USB Controller keyboard

Arturia's KeyStep 37 is a compact 37-note MIDI controller and polyphonic sequencer designed for hybrid modular, hardware, and software setups. Expanding on the original KeyStep concept, it adds five extra keys, four assignable encoders, enhanced chord functions, and harmony-aware sequencing, while operating independently of a computer when required. Its Slimkey keyboard is velocity- and aftertouch-sensitive, complemented by pitch and modulation touch strips for added expressivity. At its core lies a 64-step sequencer with eight memory slots, paired with a fully-fledged arpeggiator that moves beyond conventional up/down modes into repeatable, phrase-based sequencing. More than a simple keyboard controller, the KeyStep 37 functions as a self-contained musical sketchpad – built for generating ideas, reshaping sequences in real time, and driving hardware or software instruments intuitively.

Architecture and performance

The KeyStep 37's sequencing engine stacks up to eight notes per step across 64 steps, allowing chords and layered harmonies, while RGB LEDs above the keys provide clear visual feedback during sequencing and arpeggiation. Patterns can be programmed step by step in classic hardware style or recorded in real time, with Scale mode, transposition, swing, and loop-length adjustment available during playback. The arpeggiator builds on traditional up, down, and random modes with a dedicated Pattern mode that generates structured, repeating sequences that can be edited on the fly. Chord mode extends this approach with preset chord types, user-defined voicings, and velocity-dependent chord density, while the Strum function spreads notes over time for guitar-like articulation. Four assignable encoders control up to 16 MIDI CC parameters across four switchable banks, providing hands-on access to external hardware and software parameters.

Designed for performers and hybrid creators

The Arturia KeyStep 37 is aimed at musicians who value playability and real-time interaction within hybrid setups. Synth players and modular users benefit from its standalone sequencing and direct CV/Gate control, while producers can use it as a hands-on companion to DAWs, grooveboxes, or hardware workstations. Its extended keyboard range and expressive keybed make it particularly suited to melodic work, chord exploration, and live pattern manipulation. Because sequences can be transposed, extended, or reshaped during playback, it supports a fluid workflow that encourages experimentation without breaking momentum. For musicians who want a self-sufficient tool for generating and developing ideas away from the screen, KeyStep 37 offers a balanced blend of keyboard performance and pattern-based composition.

About Arturia

Arturia's success story began with software emulations of well-known analogue synthesizers such as the Moog Minimoog, Sequential Prophet-5, and Oberheim SEM. The popular software instruments included in the V Collection are still flagship products of the French developer today. Over time, Arturia has gradually expanded its range and now also offers a host of hardware devices, ranging from synthesizers and keyboard controllers to sequencers. Since then, the former software developer has thus also become a household name in the world of analogue synthesizers and other equipment.

Connectivity and CV/Gate control

Connectivity has always been central to the KeyStep concept, allowing it to operate confidently within both computer-based and hardware-focused environments. USB provides bus power and MIDI communication with DAWs and software instruments, while an optional DC input supports standalone use. Full-size MIDI DIN In and Out sockets connect directly to external gear. Dedicated CV/Gate outputs – pitch, gate, and modulation – address modular systems and analogue synths directly, while MIDI-to-CV conversion routes external keyboards or sequencers through the unit. Analogue Sync In/Out maintains stable timing with vintage and modern equipment alike, and a sustain pedal input adds further expressive control. Whether used on its own or within a larger rig, KeyStep 37 brings software, MIDI, and CV instruments into a unified workflow.

Nicely build and good playable keyboard with some flaws
HarleyBentonRocks 28.02.2024
I would like to start by saying that am only interested in a 37-keyboard midi keyboard with a nice keybed for playing with soft synths (GarageBand, Synth one, King Digital, etc.) on my iPad, connected to my Boss RC-500 looping station. I use a keyboard mainly as an addition to my acoustic and electric guitar(s), also connected to the looping station and amplifier, I do not use the ARP and Chord function. Because of this (playing together with guitar) the Transpose function (transpose whole keyboard up/down semitones) and Hold function (holding a played note) are important to me. And exactly these features, although prominently on the dashboard, are not exactly what you would expect. With the Keystep 37 both these functions work together with the Arp/sequencer and not when playing the keyboard. That is a disappointment, maybe I should have read the 100+ page user manual in advance….

Although the keybed is nice to play I did return the keyboard and, for the time being, keep my Arturia MiniLab III (which has both these features and has a great keybed) as my main midi controller in addition to my Akai Mpk Mini Play (which does not). The Akai I use mainly for the percussion pads, I find the keybed too mini and the keys too stiff.

All the above is a personal opinion and based on the setup in which it is used. The quality of all the mentioned keyboards is very good!

Easy to use

Arturia Keystep 37 USB-Controller Keyboard

Aanrader.
