An entire studio in one workstation
The AKAI Professional MPC XL is a fully equipped music production workstation that takes sampling and sequencing to the next level. Powered by a second-generation eight-core processor and 16GB of RAM, it can handle 16 audio tracks and 256 sampling voices simultaneously – so producers can put together entire albums on a single device. Flexible inputs and outputs on the rear panel support recording and mixing tasks; tracks can be edited directly in the system and refined with integrated effects, for really dynamic productions. The system also includes 32 virtual instruments, enabling users to compose music anywhere without relying on external instruments. The intuitive user interface, in combination with a multi-touch display and adjustable viewing angle, allows for a clear and efficient workflow. What more could a producer wish for?
Complex and yet intuitive
The 16 RGB pads in the centre of the user interface immediately catch the eye and allow musicians both to play the MPC XL's range of virtual instruments and to trigger pre-recorded samples. With velocity sensitivity and 3D sensor technology, these pads open up new possibilities for expressive beatmaking. Each pad is divided into four quadrants, allowing for advanced control of X/Y parameters – for sound morphing, layering, and other modulations. Above the pads, there are 16 endless rotary knobs that can be assigned to various parameters, while buttons below the pads provide quick access to multiple modes, including the internal sequencer, which has 16 steps and adjustable parameters such as velocity and sequence length. These accessible tools keep the workflow particularly clear and intuitive, despite the apparent complexity of this device's capabilities.
Central control hub for a hybrid hardware setup
In addition to two monitor outputs for stereo playback, the rear panel includes a headphone output for silent production. Four further outputs allow signals to be routed to additional speakers for alternative monitoring – or to external effects devices, which can then be patched back in. Two XLR combo jacks support microphones, as well as keyboards, guitars, and basses, with an internal amp simulation that can be adjusted via insert effects during production. Hip-Hop producers will appreciate the RCA connector, which allows them to sample directly from a connected turntable. CV/Gate and MIDI inputs and outputs enable seamless integration of external synthesizers, samplers, and entire modular systems, positioning the MPC XL as a central control hub within a hybrid hardware setup. Finally, the unit allows for flexible project storage on via USB.
Mixing, editing, sound design
The AKAI Professional MPC XL is aimed at experienced music producers who are looking for a comprehensive yet portable solution for their professional productions. Despite its compact dimensions, the numerous controls are clearly arranged and very intuitively organised, so it's easy for artists of all kinds to make use of its immense functionality in a range of production tasks – from mixing and editing entire tracks to designing new sounds with a musician's unique fingerprint. This is made particularly easy by the XL Channel Command function, which provides instant access to levels, sends, outputs, and recording parameters. And with the assignable Q-Link encoders and touch strip controller, users have genuine, organic control over automations such as filter sweeps, adding variety and musicality to their productions. The only limits with this device are in the producer's own imagination.
About AKAI Professional
Akai Professional has its origins in the long-established Japanese company Akai, founded in 1929, which initially manufactured electric motors, soon to be followed by high-quality tape recorders and hi-fi products. Since 1988, Akai has also become a household name like no other on the Hip-Hop scene. With the development of its first MIDI Production Centre (MPC for short), created in collaboration with Roger Linn, Akai wrote history by decisively influencing the sound of Hip-Hop and Electronic music, which it continues to do to this very day. Famous exponents of the MPC series include DJ Shadow, Eminem, and Kanye West. Today, Akai is also well known for its robust and versatile USB MIDI controllers, not least of which is the bulletproof APC range of Ableton controllers.
From an initial idea to an entire album
A selection of demo projects spanning a wide range of musical styles helps new users explore the Akai MPC XL's capabilities right from the start, offering practical insight into its sounds, sequencing tools, and production workflow. Whether it's building a beat from custom samples or transforming a simple guitar‑and‑vocals take into a polished arrangement, the workstation supports a wide range of creative workflows. Integrated Wi‑Fi connectivity simplifies setup, project management, and content access. Then, starting a new project drops users straight into Main Mode, where sampling, sequencing, and mixing tools are immediately at hand – inviting musicians to move quickly from initial ideas to finished tracks.
