A compressor legend in a compact pedal

The 1176, a monophonic FET compressor/limiter originally developed in 1967 by UREI (as Universal Audio was called at the time), has long been regarded as one of the true classics in its field. This compact pedal from the UAFX series now recreates the circuitry of the analogue original with remarkable precision, translating every parameter into the digital domain for guitarists and bassists alike. Input, output, attack, and release can all be adjusted, while four different compression levels and the legendary All Buttons In mode offer a wide range of tonal possibilities. Parallel compression adds even more flexibility, complemented by three selectable operating modes (Single, Dual and Sustain), some of which combine two 1176 emulations for enhanced depth and character. With so many options available, shaping the perfect dynamic response is both intuitive – and inspiring.

Universal Audio UAFX 1176 Studio Compressor

Studio sound for guitar and bass

The Universal Audio 1176 Studio Compressor features a carefully recreated compressor circuit that delivers an authentic sonic character while ensuring smooth, latency-free performance, thanks to its powerful signal processor. With customised input levels and impedances, the rugged pedal is perfectly optimised for use with electric guitars and basses in demanding musical environments. The 1176 can be adjusted quickly and intuitively via its five main controls, while additional switches for the various operating modes and parallel compression actually provide greater flexibility than the original hardware. A multi-coloured status LED keeps compression intensity clearly visible at all times, and the configurable bypass function guarantees maximum tonal transparency when the effect is disengaged.

Intuitive and flexible

The UAFX 1176 Studio Compressor is designed for guitarists and bassists seeking a high-quality pedal that faithfully captures the distinctive sound character of the historic original. With adjustable attack and release times, multiple compression ratios ranging from 4:1 to 20:1 (including the iconic All Buttons In mode), and switchable, adjustable parallel compression, artists can shape their tone with immense flexibility and musicality. Sonically, the pedal delivers effects that can feel powerful, subtle, or really punchy and pumping, setting the 1176 apart from typical compressor pedals. Despite its wide tonal range and depth, it's disarmingly intuitive and straightforward to use.

About Universal Audio

Few manufacturers can draw upon a wealth of audio engineering experience comparable to that of Universal Audio. The company's founding father Bill Putnam, along with his friend Les Paul, have an admirable reputation as trend-setting music producers and developers of legendary analogue studio technology. Putnam recorded Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, and Sarah Vaughan, and was Duke Ellington's favourite sound engineer. He developed the famous 1176 Peak Limiter and distributed the Teletronix LA-2A level amplifier. This earned him a posthumous "Technical Grammy Award" in 2000. In 1999, Putnam's sons, Bill Putnam Jr. and James Putnam, re-founded Universal Audio, transferring their father's analogue vision and craftsmanship to the digital music world. Their product range includes audio interfaces, dedicated DSP farms, and a variety of plug-ins, as well as analogue hardware devices.

Spank, Sustain and Fuzz

In general, the 1176 is appreciated for its fast and clean compression, making it a reliable choice for a wide range of playing styles and applications. In Single mode, crisp, clean tones for Country playing and Slap techniques can be achieved just as easily as added sustain for solos or a fuller, more consistent response. The Sustain mode takes this behaviour even further by combining two cascaded 1176 emulations, resulting in noticeably extended sustain and a more pronounced compression effect. Dual mode offers an entirely different character, recreating the iconic sound of Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog", where Jimmy Page first distorted his guitar with one 1176 and then further compressed it with a second unit, resulting in a distinctive, dynamic fuzz tone with plenty of sustain – ideal for direct recording without the need for an amplifier.
