High-class channel strip

The Tube-Tech MEC 1A is a mono channel strip that is based entirely on tube circuits and combines Tube-Tech's three flagship devices in a compact 2U housing: The MP 1A (a microphone preamp), the EQ 1A (an equaliser), and the CK 1B (an opto-compressor). Like all products from the Danish tube specialist, the MEC 1A also boasts exceptional sound specs, sophisticated circuitry, and top-quality workmanship. The signal path itself is equipped with input and output transformers and seven tubes. Tube-Tech have managed to successfully combine classic circuit concepts and modern engineering to give the MEC 1A sonic capabilities that go far beyond typical "vintage" qualities, and leave absolutely nothing to be desired in terms of performance: With its comprehensive range of features, it is more than flexible enough to meet modern standards. In short: A thoroughbred studio workhorse.

Tube-Tech MEC 1A Mono Channel Strip

Fully equipped right away

The Tube-Tech MEC 1A is a comprehensively equipped channel strip of the highest technical quality. The input stage has microphone and DI inputs, as well as precise rotary and toggle switches for gain, phantom power, pad, phase inversion, and subsonic filter. The input stage is followed by the phenomenally flexible three-band passive EQ: While the sidebands have a shelving characteristic with six switchable operating frequencies each, the midband operates as a bell curve with twelve frequencies and an adjustable Q factor. The opto-compressor offers all the functional options users would expect from a modern compressor with ratio, threshold, and attack and release, as well as catch-up gain. The two side-chain paths are another interesting feature, allowing external processors to be looped in and up to ten(!) MEC 1A units to be linked. This positively luxurious set of features is rounded out with bypass switches for EQ and compressor, as well as the option to swap both modules in the signal path.

Tracking for professionals

The Tube-Tech MEC 1A will most likely feel at home in professional studios – not least because of its commanding price. In the studio, this channel strip will provide users with an uncompromising recording and mixing tool: Its sonic qualities will satisfy the highest demands, and are by no means limited to the stereotypical "vintage" attributes. On the contrary, the MEC 1A is an unflinchingly precise sound-shaping tool with an extraordinarily natural, balanced, and transparent sound, and a very effective and yet thoroughly restrained sound refiner that harmonises well with virtually any material.

About Tube-Tech

The Danish pro audio manufacturer Lydkraft (Tube-Tech) was founded in 1977 and has been developing professional outboard equipment using tube technology since 1985. The company's conceptual focus is on uncompromising quality standards, key to which is their handcrafted build philosophy: Every product is hand-built by a tiny team of only six people. Company owner John G. Petersen was initially inspired by classic tube equipment, but soon perfected the concepts – and has now created numerous classics himself over the years. The CL 1B, for example, a compressor in the "LA-2A" style, has established itself as a standard for countless vocal chains. Today, the list of Tube-Tech users reads like a "Who's Who" of the Pop and Rock world. Over 15,000 Tube-Tech devices have already been sold.

More than "just" tracking

The Tube-Tech MEC 1A is clearly predestined to play the leading role in a recording chain – one imagines it most often being used in combination with one or more high-quality vocal or instrument microphones. However, the device has been equipped with a number of functions that significantly expand its range of applications: For example, looping an additional EQ into the side-chain allows the compressor to be used as a de-esser, ideal for vocal recordings. Side-chain number two can be used to link a maximum of ten MEC 1A units, making it easy to create sophisticated stereo and multi-channel setups. When operated as a line amp and with the order of EQ and compressor reversed, a pair of MECs can even be used as a mastering tool.

This is hands down the best preamp that I've ever used. Amazing amount of control and nuance, and a clean, full, rich tone.
