Manual dimmer for lighting small stages

The Stairville DS-2 RF DMX single-channel dimmer offers a flexible and convenient way of adjusting spotlight brightness to suit what is happening on the stage, enabling easy alternation between bright theatrical lighting and subtle, atmoshperic light for song performances. The dimmer is not only characterised by an excellent price/performance ratio but also boasts a comparatively high maximum current rating of up to 10A, making it additionally suitable for use with more powerful spotlights. The Stairville DS-2 RF DMX dimmer can be taken on tour as hand luggage or permanently installed on a wall or ceiling, and this diminutive workhorse features a dimming and switching facility as well as a preheat function, ensuring that the connected lights have a long lifespan.

Dimming made simple

The DS-2 RF DMX single-channel dimmer from Thomann’s in-house brand Stairville allows the brightness of one or more spotlights to be steplessly adjusted. The consumers should have a total maximum output of 2,300W and, with inductive loads, the current should not exceed 6A. The dimming function can be operated in a number of ways – using the slider on the actual device, via the external, wired remote control, or by a DMX controller (e.g. a lighting console), which can be connected to the three-pin XLR input. The dimmer system also comes with a DMX output. To produce special effects, the user can activate the "Switch Pack" mode using the buttons beneath the small display; this serves to deactivate a connected spotlight completely in the lower dimming range, which is only reactivated when the DMX value exceeds 40 percent.

For lighting on the go

For small theatre productions and musicians on tour, the Stairville DS-2 RF DMX single-channel dimmer provides the ideal connection between spotlights and artistic design requirements. The wired remote control unit allows the brightness to be adjusted from the stage to suit every scene or song and, with the device positioned at just a short distance (and of course during musical performances), the inevitable dimmer buzz cannot be heard. Sufficient space for the small manual dimmer can be found on a tour bus and at any location courtesy of its compact dimensions. The fuse is also easily accessible in this model, should it ever need to be replaced. Operators of small performance facilities in multi-functional rooms as well as gallery and restaurant owners can fix the dimmer to a small eyelet on the wall or ceiling.

Light for touring shows

Travelling theatre troupes often have no time to lose after arriving at the venue: Everything has to be up and running as quickly as possible. First, the two spotlights they have brought are deftly screwed onto their stands and positioned at the left and right edges of the stage, and the Stairville DS-2 RF DMX dimmer will easily fit beneath one of these. With things running this smoothly, the facility manager will see right away that professionals are at work! Next, the remote control is placed at the edge of the stage, the dimmer connected to the power supply, and the two spotlights connected to the dimmer's output using an extension cable and a power strip. Finally, the two spotlights are focused on the actors, and one of the performers can then discreetly dim the light during the performance. An additional benefit is that all settings made in the menu are retained even after the dimmer has been switched off.

Handig om in je kist te hebben.

Ik heb twee van deze dimmers en vind dit erg praktisch om bij een klein podium bijv. 2 2bars met 0.5 kw theaterspotjes aan te sturen. Soms via DMX, maar ook erg handig om gewoon een schuifje te hebben om snel even iets op de juiste stand te kunnen zetten.

werkt goed als je meerdere halogeen lampen het zelfde wilt laten doen voor weinig geld.

Mooie afwerking, stevige behuizing en makkelijke bediening. Ook makkelijk dat hij zowel stand-alone als met DMX te bedienen is. Kortom een TOP PRODUCT!!

I have them attached to the side of PAR can mounts for the PAR cans that I move around a lot - easy way to put them anywhere where there's DMX and power available. I have used them for 50W to 1000W lamps and they have worked flawlessly so far. They have also survived a few blown lamps. I have even used them to switch some random decorative LED lights or UV fluorescent lights on or off (without dimming).
The unit has a proper metal case and is built solid enough to survive more than a few bumps and drops. Overall build quality seems to be surprisingly good both outside and inside. All the terminals inside are properly secured, it has proper grounding, no loose screws, soldering is good. The switching element is a BTA416008 triac, which is rated for 40A and can handle 400A surge current for 20ms.
Only problems I saw where not enough thermal compound between the internal heat sink and the case (not really a problem in my case - the internal heat sink doesn't get that hot) and the inductor is only partially potted so you can hear some buzzing when the dimmer isn't fully on or off (I have one at home and it's a bit annoying but not really a problem on a big stage). Also the mains cable isn't very flexible

I replaced the 3 pin XLR sockets with 5 pin ones on my units. It was quite easy to do as there where extra solder pads for 5 pin sockets (but you have to remove 15 screws to get the PCB out).

The user interface (3 buttons and numeric LED display) is simple but intuitive enough to make the user manual useless.

If you need a cheap and reliable dimmer for incandescent lamps, without anything too fancy, this one will do fine if you don't mind a slight buzzing sound.
