Top sound at a low price

The Sennheiser e835 is a cardioid dynamic microphone for vocals and speech that delivers a sound which is assertive, present, and clearly defined in the high frequencies. Even when singers spontaneously change the pick-up angle and move further away from the capsule, the e835 delivers consistent transmission quality, thus ensuring a wide sweet spot and making handling very straightforward. The e835 has the very robust construction typical for Sennheiser products, reliably protecting the microphone from damage. These features, combined with its attractive pricing, make the Sennheiser e835 a superb entry-level microphone. A matching carrying pouch and microphone clamp (MZQ 800) are also included.

Lots of presence without the sibilance

Sennheiser's specs have the transmission range of the e835 covering 40Hz to 16kHz. After only a quick look at the transmission range given in the technical data, experienced eyes will note that there is a boost between 3kHz and 10kHz, as well as a slight dip at 7kHz. This ensures a present, assertive sound while delivering a high level of speech intelligibility, with a notable suppression of harsh, aggressive sibilants. At 2.7 mV/Pa, the very high free-field open-circuit transmission ratio – also known simply as sensitivity – is higher than is typically the case for dynamic microphones, helping the e835 achieve a comparatively powerful output.

Simply good results

The Sennheiser e835 is an excellent choice for anyone interested in a solid alternative to that well-known American microphone with a 58 in its name, offering excellent sound with a level of speech intelligibility and assertiveness that is almost unmatched in this price category. The e835 is, ultimately, a fairly rudimentary dynamic microphone – this is the reason for its low price, in that it does without a lot of potentially unnecessary technical gimmicks. However, there is one small detail that the engineers at Sennheiser have come up with: The capsule is elastically mounted, making it less sensitive to handling noise.

About Sennheiser

In June 1945, Prof. Fritz Sennheiser founded the Wennebostel Laboratory, which initially produced measuring equipment. Commissioned by Siemens in 1945, the young company developed the MD-1 microphone, which was launched in 1946. After the development of further microphones, the company was renamed Sennheiser Electronic in 1958. Two years later, Sennheiser introduced the MD 421 dynamic microphone, which is still in production today and still held in high esteem by many sound engineers. Further groundbreaking developments, such as the HD 414 headphones and the classic MD 441 microphone, hugely enhanced the company's international reputation, eventually making Sennheiser one of the leading manufacturers of microphone and headphone systems in the world.

Live on stage or in the studio

The Sennheiser e835 is perfectly tailored to the human voice in all its nuances, and as such it excels at capturing both vocals and speech. Be it live, in the rehearsal room, or in the home studio: The bold, articulate sound and high level of speech intelligibility guarantee a top-quality acoustic result. In addition, the robust metal housing and the wire mesh grille reliably protect the mic from mechanical influences, so that hard-rocking singers or clumsy studio techs aren't a problem.

Excellent pro Vocal Mic
paulo1964 20.12.2019
Having worked in M.I. retail for years, I buy on quality and features rather than brand names. When I discovered JTS mics over ten years ago I was able to a/b the SM58 and the beta 58 with the JTS version which was better than the sm58 on sound and almost as good as the beta for much less money.Only after 10 years that mic died and I needed another. Havong done the research I was looking at this, its slightly dearer big brother or a Midnight Blues from AKG. Taking all specs, prices and reviews into consideration I chose this 835.
Wow! Even though I am used to a decent mic, this astounded me with its clarity, crispness and feedback repulsion. Its heavy, which is a good sign and looks sleek and smooth.
The cover was a bit cheap looking so I transferred it to a padded cover I aready have. It came with its own mic clip which was good.
I'm not sure how the 845 could be better tbh but I'm more than happy with this.
For reference I am using it for backing vocals and occasional lead vocal; going through a Mackie PA; I have a low-ish male voice but sing some hgh harmonies and we play mainly 60s-80s rock and roll and ballads, so it may or may not suit other genres as well.

E835

I bought this to try out as a possible alternative to my Shure Beta-58 A's. I'm really happy with the sound of my 58s, I know them well, but they are a very warm sounding mic that needs some EQ work to be done to make them sound crystal clear. The E835 is exactly what I hoped for out of the box. There is a baked in EQ of some low cut and some treble & presence lift. Used for vocals, this mic just cut through the mix before I applied any EQ at its first gig. The singer's voice was really clear and words were nicely defined, definitely not getting lost/muddy in the FOH mix, and awesome in monitors and IEMs. Feedback at decent volume was rejected well too. I'll be buying a couple more of these soon.

What is not to like?

We use serveral E835's in the band.
They are robust and in my opinion just a tad nicer sounding than the SM58's you hear and see everywhere. I think especially male vocals benefit from the little extra clarity they give. And they might be a bit cheaper?
They come with a zipper bag with a little padding and a mic holder to screw on the mic pole. I would buy an E385 again without hesitation.

The 4 stars on sound is only because I think serious lead singers should opt for a E945 or somesuch (they shouldn't settle for an SM58 either).

Budget but still great
Stublito 01.04.2023
I replaced a set of E935 with these, they are half the price. I expected some difference in the audio quality, but only one singer so far has noticed the difference, and he thought they sounded "thicker." Tremendous value.
