The Rode Studio Solution Set is an ideal way to lay all the foundations for an effective studio recording setup in one fell swoop. The Rode NT2-A large-diaphragm condenser mic is a tough all-rounder, offering switchable polar patterns, a three-stage low-cut filter, and a pad switch. To mount the mic on a stand, this set includes the SM6 shock mount. It's also worth noting that the fabric pop shield the set also includes is actually fixed to the mount via a short, rigid arm – a major step up from the less stable gooseneck models that clamp to the stand. Rounding off the set is a 6m XLR cable for hooking the mic up to an audio interface, as well as a dust cover to keep everything clean.

Pick your polar pattern

The Rode NT2-A at the heart of this set is a transformerless mic that uses a DC converter to boost its output voltage, and it weighs in at a solid-feeling 860g. There are switches on the front, just below the grille: A high-pass filter can be engaged at 40 or 80Hz to cut out unwanted low-end rumble, and a pad switch offers -5 or -10dB attenuation to tame hot signals. Thanks to its dual diaphragm, the mic's polar pattern is switchable too: It can record in cardioid, figure-of-eight, or omni, and power can come from the usual 48V phantom source, but 24V will also do the job. The frequency response runs from 20Hz to 20kHz, while the maximum SPL is an impressive 147dB.

Rode's Studio Solution Set is an affordable yet comprehensive piece of kit that represents a great way to step into the world of recording. The NT2-A mic perhaps shows off its strengths best in cardioid mode, giving vocal takes a real life and a touch of freshness, thanks to a boost in the upper mids and high frequencies. However, the mic's solid sound and overall sonic qualities also make it a good choice for instrument miking or room capture. All in all, this Rode set offers excellent value for money, and can be confidently recommended to anyone who's just starting out in the world of recording – whatever they plan to use it for.

Take this all-rounder for a spin

The NT2-A is incredibly versatile, which is a real plus for beginners who don't have a big microphone collection – at least not yet. In cardioid mode, it's spot-on for vocals and instruments, and with its high maximum SPL, it can sit right in front of loud sources like a snare or bass drum. Switch to figure-of-eight and, paired with another mic, it's ready for mid/side stereo recording, while the omni setting gives budding studio techs the option of using the NT2-A as a room mic – to capture an ensemble or group, or to lend an individual voice a sense of the space around it.

GOEDE INVESTERING

De Rode NT2-A lag wat boven het budget dat ik in gedachten had maar ik ben blij dat ik iets meer heb geïnvesteerd. De microfoon is uitstekend gebouwd, ronduit mooi om te zien en ook de shock-mount met geïntegreerde plopkap tonen kwaliteit. Over de uitstekende technische specificaties had ik al gelezen. Ik heb bij collega muzikanten/producers eerder een aantal (betaalbare) condensator microfoons uitgeprobeerd zonder daarbij echt dat 'aha' gevoel te ervaren. De Rode NT2-A bleek perfect omdat hij bij mijn stem en manier van zingen past.

De pad -5 / - 10 switch is voor als we een keertje herrie gaan maken mooi meegenomen. De laag-af switch draagt ook bij aan het flexibele karakter van deze Rode. De om te sckakelen opname patronen: cardoide, figure-8 of omni-directioneel, maken van deze Rode NT2-A echt creatief gereedschap. Ik heb na ontvangst de tekst van een eerder opgenomen 'commerciële kraker' ingezongen: omni, cardoide en fig. 8. De keuze viel na beluisteren direct op de omni-directionele versie. Omdat de mix tussen het directe, en het door mijn home-studio gereflecteerde zang geluid, de song precies het goeie sfeertje gaf. Een eye-opener. De betaalbaarheid. De over-all kwaliteit van deze studio microfoon, samen met de voor mij (vanaf nu) onmisbare flexibiliteit tov cardioide microfoons, maken de Rode NT2-A voor mij een vijf-sterren product.

Geweldige studio microfoon

Deze microfoon is in één woord: Geweldig!

Hij vangt mijn stem prima op. Soms hoor ik wat omgevingsgeluiden in mijn thuisstudio. Door de gevoeligheid wat lager te zetten worden deze niet opgevangen. Opnames klinken naturel, ik herken mezelf.

Pluspunten: natuurgetrouwe opname, handig ophangsysteem waardoor je geen last hebt van trillingen, verschillende instellingen.

Minpunten: geen enkele.

Niet geschikt voor het echte werk

Sinds kort ben ik bezig met het maken van opnamen voor (jazz)bandjes. Daarvoor heb ik de Rode NT2-a gekocht om te dienen als 'standaard' vocal mic. Daar is hij niet geschikt voor. De microfoon klinkt dun en enigszins metalig. Ik ben dan ook alweer opzoek naar een upgrade.

Plus punten zijn:
- degelijk gebouwd
- lage eigenruis
- Veelzijdige polar patterns waardoor de mic bruikbaar is voor een mid-side opstelling.
- -20 db pad, samen met een sm57 is het een redelijke kick mic
- shockmount, popfilter en xlr kabel lijken van redelijke kwaliteit.

Mijn advies zou zijn deze microfoon niet te kopen, maar om of door te sparen voor een betere condensator, of - als dit geen optie is- te gaan voor een goede dynamische mic.

de RODE NT 2A is voor mij een juiste keuze

Voor mijn Home studio heb ik lang gezocht, maar als je op zoek bent naar een geweldige microfoon die geweldig geluid kan leveren tegen een betaalbare prijs, zoek dan niet verder. Lastig om een microfoon te vinden die bij je stem past, maar ik ben zeer tevreden het klinkt goed. Ook het geluid van mijn akoestische western gitaar was geweldig. De Instelmogelijkheid zijn prima, drie verschillende patroon standen: Omni, Cardioid of Figuur 8. Daarnaast is de PAD en highpass filter te schakelen op de body van de microfoon.
De mic wordt gebruikt met de Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 3rd Gen 8-in, 6-out USB audio interface en Presonus StudioLive AR12c hybride 12-kanaals mixer
