Put bass problems to bed

The PSI Audio AVAA C20 is an excellent solution for combating room modes at frequencies below 100Hz. Thanks to its active electronics and its innovative acoustic concept, it offers producers a more accurate, analytical sound image by reducing the reverberation time of low frequencies – with an effect comparable to that of a passive bass absorber 25 times its size. Importantly, the AVAA C20 doesn't generate counter-sound (anti-noise) in the room; neither does it need any fine-grade calibrating or necessitate costly structural modifications to the space itself. This makes the AVAA C20 much more flexible than conventional bass absorption solutions, allowing it to be integrated into existing setups far more easily.

How to tame that bass

The PSI Audio AVAA C20 is an Active Velocity Absorber, to give it its full name. What this means, put simply, is that it converts the maximum sound pressure that builds up at boundary surfaces into particle velocity using an acoustic resistance – a finely perforated metal plate. An integrated microphone at the boundary measures these velocity data and sends them to the active electronics: A loudspeaker located behind the acoustic resistance then compensates for the particle velocity by emitting sound waves in opposite phase into a heavily damped acoustic chamber. Despite having a surface area of just 0.2m², the AVAA C20 achieves an equivalent absorption area of 0.6 to 4m², depending on the source's frequency and the device's position in the room.

Enhanced acoustics everywhere

Developed in collaboration with two Swiss universities, the PSI Audio AVAA C20 improves acoustics in professional settings like recording studios and broadcast vans, but also residential and commercial spaces. It delivers a noticeable improvement in sound quality by reducing room modes, which cause frequency build-ups at walls and standing waves within the room, leading to an undefined and imbalanced sound image. Thanks to its compact size and broadband characteristics, the AVAA C20 is also significantly more flexible, cost-effective, and space-saving than conventional passive absorbers, which must be precisely tuned to specific problematic frequency ranges to be effective.

About PSI Audio

PSI Audio, a brand under Relec SA, is based in Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland. The company was originally founded in 1977 by Alain Roux as Roux Electroacoustique, specialising in Hi-Fi speaker development. In 1988, the company was restructured as Relec SA, expanding into PA and studio markets while producing both proprietary models and OEM products for renowned brands like Studer (1992–2003). The PSI Audio brand launched in 2004, offering premium studio monitors for professional users. These products are known for their fully analogue circuit designs and meticulous Swiss craftsmanship, ensuring exceptional performance and reliability for audio professionals.

It all depends on where you put it

For the PSI Audio AVAA C20 to function at its best, its placement within the room is critical. Ideally, this active bass absorber should be positioned up against a wall – or even better, in a corner of the room. Still, it's important to ensure adequate air circulation behind the unit to prevent the integrated electronics from overheating. The AVAA C20 is effective at reducing room modes between 15 and 150Hz within a radius of 1 to 1.5m around its placement: For this reason, anyone setting up their recording space should avoid placing large reflective objects in its immediate vicinity, as they can reduce its effectiveness. Ideally, the walls near the unit should be smooth and uninterrupted.

The ultimate weapon on the bass front

The AVAA is basically a pressure cancelling device working in the lower frequency domain. All you have to do is to find a good spot where the pressure is maximized, turn it on and you are done. The result will heavily depend on the selected location. If the room modes are evenly distributed in your room (you have a room with good ratios), then the effect can be somewhat limited. But if your room has poor ratios (concentrating room modes into single locations), then the AVAA can help you a lot.
The area of effect of the unit is large but still limited, e.g. in my case a whole corner is problematic from top to bottom, which means only 2 units can cover it properly. Unfortunately there is no mounting option, so you have to figure out in this case how do you put the unit (13kg) 1.5m high above the ground.
With 2-3 units the measurements show night and day difference in the whole bass region - frequency and time domain as well. This is indeed the ultimate weapon against room modes. Of course you still have to treat your room for reflections, SBIR etc.

Pros:
- built like a tank
- no setup required
- no sound is emitted, no DSP involved
- works like a tuned absorber, but in ALL frequencies from 15Hz (!) up to 150Hz
- future proof: works in any room, can be relocated easily if conditions/requirements change over time
- the area of effect is much larger than the unit itself or a single tuned absorber

Cons:
- no mounting option
- high unit price
- a single unit most probably won't be enough
- confined spaces, close large objects can make it unstable (yes, this is true)

Mastering the low-end frequency response was always troublesome.
mlez 27.09.2022
DIY bass traps, expensive factory-made passive traps, room correction softs, I tried it all. Some frequencies were still a pain because most of us (home)studio owners do not have the budget to build a mastering room from scratch. So some bass reflections keep disturbing the sound flow in the mix and mastering.

Having said that, we have to consider the price of the PSI Audio AVAA C20, knowing we have to buy at least two of them. You need one in each corner, ideally. That's a very heavy load on our savings, but...
You only have to buy them once!
Passive bass traps are made for the room specifically, and as soon as you change anything, like your mixing position or some furniture, your bass trap has to be adjusted. Let alone if you relocate your business to a larger or smaller room.

With the PSI Audio AVAA C20 one can just put it in the corner and it will adjust itself to the new situation without complaining.
My low-end frequency response is cleaner and steadier. I even remastered some older tunes just for the fun of relistening through them and re-releasing them on the streaming services again because of the improvements I heard.
A lot of money? Yes, but it was worth it.

Like a miracle.

I had some phasing issues in my studio. Heard about AVAA and ordered two to try out and it worked miraculously. I can hear more solid and focused bass than before.
