5. Cables
Important: Whenever possible, use only XLR connectors for microphones.
Some DJ mixers only offer 1/4" TS or TRS jacks, which require an adapter (female XLR to male 1/4" TRS).
Some microphones require special cables. For example, tube microphones typically need multi-conductor cables, which are usually included with the microphone.
The question whether high-end microphone cables sound better is the subject of a heated debate among experts. Some point out that in low-resistance connections, the capacitance of the cable only has a marginal effect on the frequencies within the human hearing range. Others are convinced that they can hear a difference. What's undisputed is that high-quality connectors and cables present advantages in terms of durability, susceptibility to interference and also handling. A higher quality cable tends to last longer than a cheap one, which means that spending a bit more is usually worth it. Bad cables are among the most common sources of malfunctions in the studio and on stage.
