Software and hardware-based setups

The Novation Launch Control XL 3 transmits MIDI data to computers and mobile devices via USB-C, while also providing classic 5-pin MIDI DIN In, Out and Thru connections for direct integration of external hardware. This flexibility allows seamless use in software-based DAW environments as well as in hybrid or fully hardware-focused setups. Standard MIDI commands such as CC, Note, Program Change and MIDI Clock are fully supported, ensuring broad compatibility across devices and workflows. With 15 custom modes available for flexible mapping, the controller adapts easily to different creative scenarios, while the high-resolution OLED display shows key parameter values from each control in real time for clear and intuitive operation.

About Novation

The English company Novation has been producing affordable popular synthesizers as well as MIDI controllers and keyboards since its foundation in 1992. It was later acquired by the well-known British audio interface manufacturer Focusrite, but the brand still exists within the parent company. The outstanding design, high-quality workmanship and excellent price-performance ratio of the Novation Launchpads have continued to win them many new users. Precise control – individually configurable

The Novation Launch Control XL 3 delivers precise hands-on control over clips, tracks, and parameters, with 16 programmable buttons offering direct access to functions such as solo, mute, and track focus. Eight smooth, consistent faders manage levels and effects, while the optional fader pickup ensures seamless transitions when values are adjusted. A total of 24 endless rotary controls with RGB lights take care of panning, send levels, timeline navigation, and detailed envelope shaping with clear visual feedback. With 15 freely configurable custom modes, easily set up using the free Novation Components software, individual mappings can be created for virtually any MIDI-compatible software or hardware, making this device an ideal centrepiece for flexible and expressive performance rigs.

Vielseitiger und solider Controller mit kleinen Verbesserungspotenzialen

Ich habe mir kürzlich den Novation Launch Control XL Mk3 zugelegt und bin insgesamt sehr zufrieden mit dem Gerät.

Die Drehregler haben einen angenehmen Widerstand. Hier hätte ich mir lediglich touchsensitive Regler mit zusätzlicher Push-Funktion gewünscht. Das hätte die kreative Arbeit noch weiter erleichtert. Schade, dass Novation dieses Potenzial nicht genutzt hat – vielleicht kommt das ja beim Mk4.

Die Fader laufen angenehm weich und präzise, und die unteren Mute-/Rec-Arm-Tasten haben einen sehr guten Druckpunkt. Auch die RGB-Beleuchtung gefällt mir richtig gut – sie ist kräftig, klar und sorgt für eine gute Übersicht im Setup.

Besonders positiv hervorheben möchte ich den vorinstallierten DAW-Steuermodus: Hier erhält man sofort Zugriff auf 16 Plugin-Parameter sowie 8 zusätzliche Regler, z. B. für das Scrollen im Arrangement, Zoomfunktionen und das Setzen von Loops. Diese nutze ich sehr intensiv im Ableton Arrangement View, was den Workflow erheblich beschleunigt.

Das Display ist gut ablesbar, und das gesamte Gerät wirkt stabil und wertig verarbeitet. Ein kleiner persönlicher Wunsch: Ich hätte mir ein tiefschwarzes Gehäuse gewünscht, das optisch besser zu meinen anderen Geräten (z. B. Elektron-Synths und -Drumcomputer) passen würde – aber das ist Geschmackssache. Auch so sieht der Controller modern und professionell aus.

Die Konfigurationssoftware ist intuitiv und macht, was sie soll. Hier habe ich keinerlei Kritikpunkte – das Erstellen eigener Mappings funktioniert problemlos. Meine mappings für den Elektron Digitakt 2 und Syntakt konnte ich in wenigen Minuten nach eigenen Wünschen erstellen.

Fazit: Ein durchdachter, robuster und vielseitiger Controller, den ich sowohl für die Arbeit in der DAW als auch für das Jammen mit Hardware uneingeschränkt empfehlen kann. Ich möchte ihn in meinem Setup nicht mehr missen.

Nachtrag:

Nun sind auch die ersten James gespielt und ich bin begeistert und voll und ganz von diesem Controller Überzeugt. Auch den Preis finde ich angemessen und keinesfalls überhöht.
