So many sounds, so many features

Even by the standards of modelling amp combos, which are of course versatile by design, the Mooer F40i Li stands out as exceptionally well equipped. Musicians can use it to amplify instruments and vocals at the same time, while the range of amp simulations and effects give them plenty of scope for shaping their sound. A large library of drum grooves and metronome sounds makes practising at home easier, while the looper, built-in lithium-ion battery, and integrated 40W stereo speakers also make the compact combo suitable for live performances on the go. Creators can even stream directly from the unit itself: Thanks to the OTG recording function, signals fed into the F40i's XLR and jack inputs can be recorded straight to a smartphone, camera or tablet via USB-C. It's Bluetooth compatible too, which makes it easy to integrate backing tracks, as well as providing a connection to the similarly versatile iAMP app.

Plug and play, play, play

Getting started with the Mooer F40i Li couldn't be simpler. A guitar or bass plugs straight in via the jack input, and from there the players can shape their sound with incredible freedom. A total of 55 amp models and 69 effects are available, ranging from classic clean tones and authentic tube sounds through to delays, reverbs, modulation effects, and dynamics processing. These building blocks can be combined freely and stored as presets, making a wide variety of musical styles instantly accessible. For vocals or acoustic instruments, there's also a microphone input with switchable 48V phantom power. Practice can be kept completely silent via headphones and, if the two surprisingly capable built-in speakers aren't quite enough, the line outputs make it possible to connect larger monitors or a PA system.

The music of the future

Despite its extensive feature set, the Mooer F40i Li is pleasantly approachable. Sounds can be edited directly on the unit using the integrated touchscreen, while the iAMP app adds an extra layer of flexibility, letting users organise presets, fine-tune existing sounds, and download additional sound templates from the Mooer Cloud. One particularly futuristic feature is Mooer's built-in AI, which can generate new presets from prompts – whether the goal is to emulate a well-known amplifier, explore a particular musical style, or chase an artist's specific sound, the presets thus generated can then be refined and customised as required. For anyone looking to move seamlessly between practising, recording, jamming, and performing with a single device, the F40i is a versatile musicians' toolkit.

About Mooer

Mooer is based in the Chinese city of Shenzhen and has been making products for guitarists since 2010, which include compact single pedals through to multi-effects units and compact amplifiers. The company initially produced a range of mini pedals before making perhaps its most significant breakthrough in 2016 with the sophisticated Ocean Machine delay pedal, which was designed in collaboration with Devin Townsend. Mooer's product range now also includes solutions that feature amp modelling, IR-based speaker simulation, and matching equalisers, and the company's focus remains firmly on the use of digital technology.

Rock the city or upload the next stream

The Mooer F40i Li modelling guitar combo lives up to its portable design philosophy and looks the part as well. Alongside the classic Phantom Black finish here, it's also available in the more eyecatching Imperial Gold and Snowfall White colour options. Thanks to its integrated battery and practical carrying strap, this compact, robust amplifier is easy to take along to the park or the rehearsal space. Guitarists interested in writing or performing songs should also look at the F40i's combination of drum machine and looper. Just a few riffs or chords are enough to create distinctive backing tracks, and by layering additional guitar parts over the top while singing live, musicians can apply the built-in amp models and effects to quickly turn simple loops into small-scale productions. Atmospheric soundscapes, dreamy indie textures and modern bedroom-pop sounds are all within easy reach, alongside more traditional, heavier guitar tones. For anyone wanting to capture those songs or share them with others, sessions can be recorded directly to a smartphone, camera, or tablet via the OTG connection, and can even be livestreamed.
