Far from traditional
Martin Guitar is best known for its legendary dreadnought, 000, and OM models. With the SC-13E Modern, though, the long-established acoustic guitar maker shows it's just as at home away from those classic body shapes. The asymmetric S-13 body and deep Venetian cutaway give players very modern handling, along with full access to all 20 frets. The eye-catching Mezcal Burst sunburst on the high-gloss top rounds off the unmistakable look. The back and sides, built from a three-ply koa-mahogany-koa construction, complement that look both visually and tonally: The sound is warm, clear, and focused, with well-emphasised mids. Like the whole Modern line in the fully reworked Road Series, the SC-13E Modern is built around a playing feel that's as close to that of an electric guitar as possible – for superb sound and fluid playability!
Feels like a boutique guitar
The boutique feel of the SC-13E Modern is, among other things, the result of its ebony fingerboard and overall neck form, which follows Martin's Low Profile Velocity shape. With a high-performance taper (even flatter than the Performing Artist profile on the Road Series' dreadnought and cutaway models) and a subtly rounded fingerboard edge, the guitar sits comfortably in the hand even in the upper positions. What's more, Martin's Sure Align system means the neck is bolted on rather than glued, so the neck angle – and with it the string action – can be adjusted later without the expense of a neck reset. Just as practical, and good-looking at the same time, are the Ratio tuners with skeletonised buttons on the headstock: Each tuner is matched to the gauge of its string, so every turn gives a precise, even change in pitch.
Ready for the stage
For playing to bigger audiences, the Martin SC-13E Modern is fitted with an LR Baggs Element VTC pickup system. Unlike conventional undersaddle pickups, which respond to the pressure of the strings on the bridge, the Element’s transducer follows the actual movement of the guitar's top. This helps suppress the typical 'quack' that compression causes in many piezo systems – instead, it has a remarkably dynamic, natural amplified sound. VTC stands for Volume, Tone, and Compression: The built-in compressor for the low frequencies tames boomy bass and mimics the guitar’s natural dynamic behaviour – a noticeable advantage on loud stages. The volume and tone controls sit discreetly but within easy reach in the lower left side of the soundhole.
About Martin Guitar
Martin Guitar was founded in 1833 and is thus one of the most long-established brands in the history of the acoustic guitar. Several of Martin's developments – including the dreadnought shape, robust X-bracing, the placement of the neck-to-body transition at the 14th fret (as opposed to the 12th fret as found on classical guitars), and the use of steel strings – have now become staples of modern guitar construction that countless other manufacturers have since adopted. To put it another way: Music today would sound very different had it not been for C.F. Martin & Co.
Unplugged or in the studio
The three-ply koa-mahogany-koa back and sides, together with its solid spruce top, give the Martin SC-13E Modern a clear, very musical character: full of overtones, with pronounced mids and an uncluttered low end. These qualities also prove their worth in recording, where riffs and melodies cut through the mix without much post-production. The mahogany core doesn't just add stability: With its own warm tonal character, it contributes to the overall sound acoustically as well. Together with the bolted neck and the deep cutaway, the SC-13E Modern is entirely oriented around a playing feel that comes close to an electric guitar's: Soloing, tapping, and other demanding techniques can be played comfortably all the way up into the highest positions. Anyone who values an electric-style acoustic guitar that's designed for technically advanced playing will find a well-conceived working instrument in the SC-13E Modern, for unplugged performances and studio recording alike.
In the spotlight
The new Road Series
The Road Series combines classic designs with modern reinterpretations of the Martin catalogue. The guitars are all built at the company's own facility in Mexico, which makes this level of quality possible at a more attractive price. The range covers several classic body shapes – from the compact 000 and the Grand Performance to the big-bodied dreadnought, with all Modern models featuring a cutaway. Martin also sorts the guitars into style levels: The 10 models combine a satin finish with sapele back and sides, the 12s offer the same woods in gloss, and the 13 models use walnut or koa – each inspired by the historic Martin Styles 15, 18, and 28, in that order. The electronics follow a similar logic: The Martin E1 pickup is standard across the whole series, with some models fitted with the LR Baggs Element system. Every guitar in the series ships with a softshell case, for safe transport between rehearsal rooms, concert halls, and home.
