The LD Systems Maui 5 is a remarkably lightweight PA for sound systems in small venues. Awarded the reddot design award, the Maui 5 is easy to operate, and flexible, too, thanks to its practical Bluetooth connectivity. In essence, it's an ultra-portable column PA, with an innovative design which has proven itself to be both effective and elegant. Among the more high-end features are the top-quality Class D amplifier and the ability to control the sound output's brilliance. The system, which is also available in white, is also notable for its comparatively high sound pressure and the instant, cable-free connection between the subwoofer and the column. Everyone who can happily do without extreme bass levels will be rewarded with a strikingly designed and lightweight sound system.

Lightweight unit with versatile connections

The whole setup weighs only 10.9kg and consists of an 8" subwoofer, two column spacers, and a 4x3" neodymium tweeter. Simply stack them together – and the PA is ready to go. Up to 120dB can be coaxed from the LD Systems Maui 5, with a frequency response from 50Hz to 20000Hz. The inputs are plugged into the top and back of the sub unit. Specifically, these are three Neutrik jack XLR combo sockets for line and microphone signals, a Hi-Z guitar input, a stereo mini-jack input for MP3 players or smartphones, and a Bluetooth connection. Limiter, equaliser, compressor, and crossover frequency are already set in the built-in DSP. The only things that need adjusting are the input levels, the total output, and the sub level.

Discreet elegance

For musicians performing in small venues, the LD Systems Maui 5 provides powerful amplification that can be set up in minutes. Whether it’s a solo act or a singer with a pianist, this PA makes it easy to tweak levels mid-performance – right on the sub itself, and never mind the dim glow of live stages. In addition, the top unit has an enormously high feedback resistance, so that vocals come across with great power and clarity, even when artists are performing on small stages well within the dispersion angle of the speakers. The wireless connectivity and speaker's unusual yet attractive design, which blends discreetly into its surroundings, also make it ideal for product reps and presenters. Operators of cafés, bars, or gallery spaces who occasionally put on live performances can also use the Maui 5 for background music the rest of the time.

Flexible and extendable

What's special about this flexible functionality is that the setup can even be changed during operation without any audible pops or clicks: The Maui 5 is capable of adapting to any space at a moment's notice. And in order to perform in larger rooms, another unit can simply be added to create a full stereo sound system. By the way: There are robust Maui 5 bags available for transporting the subwoofer and satellite components of this practical PA.
