A stage piano for stage pianists

The Kawai MP7 SE is a high-end stage piano that brings the tone and feel of an acoustic instrument into a portable, road-ready format. At its heart are three premium piano voices, meticulously sampled from the Shigeru Kawai SK-EX, SK-5 and Kawai EX concert grands, complemented by vintage EPs, a full tonewheel organ simulation, and a wide palette of additional sounds (256 in total) ranging from synth basses to string ensembles. Kawai's acclaimed Responsive Hammer III action - a favourite among pianists - features triple-sensors, let-off simulation, and IvoryTouch key surfaces. Its solid metal and wood build is both elegant and functional, with pitch-bend and modulation wheels included. The MP7 SE is built for performers who demand authenticity and playability, as well as a durable and road-ready design with flexible sounds to serve equally well on stage, in the studio, or during composition.

Pianistic mechanics

The MP7 SE features Kawai's Responsive Hammer III keyboard action, which naturally replicates the mechanics of a high-quality upright or smaller grand piano. Its springless mechanism and triple-sensor detection capture the finest nuances, while the let-off recreates the notch-like resistance of a grand piano's hammer mechanism, providing exceptional tactile feedback and control - especially during rapid repetitions and soft playing. Graded hammer weighting across the keyboard mirrors the heavier bass and lighter treble registers found on a genuine instrument, with counterweights carefully balanced out across the full dynamic range. Furthermore, each key is coated with textured IvoryTouch surfaces that absorb moisture and provide a natural, secure grip, affording pianists both refinement and confidence during performance. Four assignable knobs, four faders, and two switches on the front panel allow further real-time adjustments for effects, layering and sound-shaping.

Hands-on operation

The Kawai MP7 SE's control panel is clearly organised, allowing players to navigate functions quickly on stage. Sounds and setups can be stored or recalled via USB, while USB-MIDI connectivity enables seamless integration with DAWs for MIDI recording and virtual instrument control. The instrument also supports direct audio playback from USB, making it possible to rehearse or perform with backing tracks. Flexible connectivity on the rear includes MIDI and multiple pedal inputs, with the supplied F-10H damper pedal (with optical sensing for precise half-pedalling) and a dedicated input for Kawai's optionally available triple-pedal unit. Built to withstand the rigours of touring, the MP7 SE combines a sturdy metal chassis with elegant wooden side panels and can be easily transported in the optional SC-1 soft case (which weighs around 22kg). With its blend of practicality and performance-ready features, the MP7 SE is a stage piano that adapts effortlessly to any musical setting.

About Kawai

Kawai is a Japanese manufacturer which has specialised in building upright and grand pianos since its inception in 1927. Since 1986, Kawai has also been producing digital pianos. Right from the start, the name "Kawai" stood for innovation: For example, Kawai produced the first digital piano with keys made entirely of wood, and also made the first keyboard to truly replicate the action of a grand piano. The list of artists who have chosen Kawai is long, and it includes both Classical pianists like Warren Mailley Smith, Ashley Fripp, and Mikhail Pletnev, and popular keyboardists like Herbert Grönemeyer, Ingo Reidl (Pur), and Don Airey (Deep Purple), among others.

Expansive sound palette

The MP7 SE offers 256 high-quality presets, all with matching 256-note polyphony, allowing seamless layering and sustain. Its core piano voices - sampled from the Shigeru Kawai SK-EX, SK-5, and Kawai EX concert grands - offer striking realism, captured across all 88 keys for authentic, nuanced control. The built-in Virtual Technician lets players fine-tune string and damper resonance, hammer noise, key-off response, and more, tailoring the sound to their exact preferences. Beyond pianos, the MP7 SE's presets include vintage EPs with five amp simulations, plus strings, synths, brass, and bass sounds – alongside a flurry of effects ready for complex layering and splitting. The virtual organ section features adjustable drawbars (controlled via the front panel), percussion and Leslie simulation, all controllable in real time for dynamic, expressive performances – rounding off a sound palette for every playing scenario.
