The practice amp with a backing band on board

The JBL BandBox Solo goes well beyond the functions of a traditional practice amp: This compact unit brings together a number of that would normally be spread across different devices. Alongside its role as an amplifier for electric and acoustic guitar, it also works as a Bluetooth speaker and playback tool. The standout function is undoubtedly the integrated Stem AI technology. It analyses streamed music in real time and can selectively reduce or completely remove individual elements of a song, such as vocals or instruments. This makes it easy to create backing tracks to play or sing along to: True to its name, the BandBox effectively becomes a virtual backing band in a box. An 18W full-range speaker provides balanced reproduction of both guitar tones and streamed music, while the combined microphone and instrument input means that users can plug in a mic or other sound sources too.

For guitarists, the JBL BandBox Solo includes an integrated amp modelling section. Eight amp models cover a wide range of sounds, from clean tones through to heavier distortion settings. These are complemented by effects such as a phaser, chorus, or tremolo, along with a selection of delay and reverb options, which means it's easy for musicians to dial in a range of authentic sounds without the need for additional pedals. All this is is handled either directly on the unit or via the JBL One app, which offers further options for tone shaping. Thanks to the full-range speaker, the playback tracks and instrument signals are all reproduced through the same system, helping everything sit together naturally.

Everyday practice tools

Beyond its impressive range of guitar tones, the JBL BandBox Solo includes a set of practical tools for everyday practice. The integrated looper allows guitarists to record and layer multiple parts, which is useful for practising solos or laying down backing tracks or vocal lines. A metronome helps with timing, while the pitch changer can adjust the key of songs, whether that's to suit a singer's vocal range or to accommodate an alternative tuning. A built-in tuner is also included, allowing a guitar or bass to be tuned directly through the unit. Key information is shown on an LED matrix display, and many parameters can also be adjusted through the JBL One app: This includes the AI-driven stem separation function, which can be fine-tuned to help isolate or turn down individual tracks within a song.

Small, loud and incredibly flexible

With its compact format, the JBL BandBox Solo is aimed primarily at musicians looking for a flexible, highly portable amplifier for practice or smaller sessions – it certainly offers enough output for that. The integrated battery provides up to six hours of operating time, so the Solo can be used almost anywhere. Music can be streamed directly from a smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth, and when combined with stem separation, it's easy to create play-along tracks for practising guitar parts or vocal lines. The integrated microphone even makes it possible to record vocals and instrument signals simultaneously over USB, allowing the BandBox Solo to double as a compact recording interface for capturing song ideas. At the same time, it can be used quite simply as a practice amp or Bluetooth speaker, whether for spontaneous jams or just listening to music.
