A recording studio compressor in a pedal!
It might seem limited in its features, but it actually gives me everything I need (and was missing).
Before turning it on i thought I had a great sound: in reality it was good, and it became even better with the Airchild at the beginning of the chain.

I gave into the hype that is being raised about this pedal on certain bass specific online forum. it is not a bad pedal at all, just not what I am looking for.

the pedal seems well made, feels really solid - except for the plastic knobs: especially the upper pair seems extra flimsy. I was a bit disappointed to find zero manual for the device. sure, it's simple enough, but it helps. instead, I had to figure out certain quirks on my own.

after you step on the switch (audible click), the pedal is turned on - that is the only LED present, and it is only to let you know the power status: it does not tell you the amount of compression or whether the threshold has been crossed. minus points in my book. next, you are left wondering whether the blend is wet-dry or dry-wet, because all controls use only a numbered scale. minus points again. btw., wet is 10, you are welcome. while we are here, the threshold operates the same way, i.e. turning the knob CW delivers more compression (I think there are more things happening than just threshold being moved), which is the opposite of what I'm used when the control is labeled as threshold (which you lower for more compression, as more signal will trigger the compressor sooner). but that's ok. we also have the output control to bring back some lost volume. the last thing that I had high hopes for is the tone control, which is a tilt EQ (think Becos or Diamond compressor pedals, and many other devices). my problem is that the control is:
1) too sensitive, i.e. turning it more than 50% either way yields an unusable sound for me;
2) the control is post EVERYTHING, i.e. it affects the signal AFTER compression and blending. it would have been so much more interesting if it had an option to only apply it to the compressed signal instead.

the compression itself is rather nice, but I found I tend to set it to certain settings (for both bass and guitar) and leave it there, I do not find it versatile. also, many times after I found a sound I liked, I turned it off to compare, and I just preffered the uncompressed sound more... so, I'll keep my eye on the next incarnation of this pedal.

Das Pedal ist schön schwer, allerdings sind keine Füße beigefügt. Das Gehäuse ist recht klein, der Einschaltknopf muss mit der Fußspitze gedrückt werden, wenn man die untere Reihe Knöpfe nicht berühren will. Das ist nervig und an der Praxis vorbei. Das schwarze Gehäuse mit den dunklen Knöpfen ist auf dunkler Bühne schlecht zu sehen. Ich fand das alles insgesamt sehr unpraktisch. Es gibt nichtmal ein Batteriefach, obwohl Kompressoren kaum was verbrauchen. Also jedesmal nerviges Netzteil (natürlich nicht dabei) aufbauen. Für einen Kompressor will ich keinen Kabelsalat auf dem Boden. Das Wichtigste aber: Die Kompression habe ich beim besten Willen nicht bemerkt, nur bei voller Einstellung eine Begrenzung (Limiter) meines Signals. (Ich besitze bereits mehrere Kompressoren und kenne das Spielgefühl). Aber weder das Spielgefühl, noch der Sound wurden besser, oder anders. Die Dynamikbegrenzung hat mich wiederum sehr gestört. Ohne das Gerät klang alles besser und offener. Dreht man den Output höher, ist es ein echt guter Booster ohne Rauschen. Die Klangregelung arbeitet auch gut, falls man den Sound noch zusätzlich anders haben möchte. Brauche ich aber beides nicht, dafür habe ich Kanalumschaltung, oder einen Tubescreamer. Fazit: Unpraktisches Gehäuse, zu dunkle Farben, kein Batteriefach und vor allem null Kompression. Zumindest in meinen Ohren. Ich behaupte mal, das kein Mensch bemerken würde, wenn ich es als Kompressor einschalte. Getestet übrigens an einem Laney Ironheart 15 Watt, 2x12 H&K Cab und Fender Telecaster. Das vielgelobte "always on" Kompressions-Pedal hat sich für mich daher als totale Niete dargestellt.
