From the depths of outer space

The Eventide Blackhole pedal is dedicated entirely to the manufacturer's much-loved reverb algorithm of the same name, famous for its long, atmospheric tails and the lush soundscapes it's capable of. This isn't about realistic room simulations – it’s about effects that feel impossibly huge. The algorithm originally came from Eventide's H4000 and H8000 studio processors, and it's also found in the Space pedal and as a plugin. Now Eventide has built a straightforward stompbox that brings this unique reverb to every guitarist's pedalboard – in a compact format with a hands-on control layout.

Eventide Blackhole, reverb effect pedal for electric guitar and bass

A studio in a stompbox

The Eventide Blackhole is aimed at live and studio players looking for something truly out of the ordinary in a reverb pedal. It's easy to control with its six dials, and secondary functions let ambitious acoustic astronauts tweak extra parameters like pre-delay and the resonance of the onboard filters. There are footswitches for bypass and freeze, plus an input for an expression pedal, to enable musicians to morph between two sets of parameters at will. The same jack can also take extra footswitches or a MIDI adapter. The Blackhole offers five onboard presets – or up to 128 when using MIDI. The output is always stereo, while the input can be switched between mono and stereo and adjusted for level. And finally, the pedal can be configured via USB using Eventide's free Event Manager software.

Lightspeed adjustments, a cosmos of sounds

Working with the Eventide Blackhole reverb pedal feels like using a classic analogue stompbox thanks to its comprehensive control layout – with the added bonus of instant access to five presets. The real magic, though, lies in the sounds it creates, which are almost impossible to achieve with conventional reverb pedals. The Blackhole delivers enveloping cascades of sound, tempo-synced pre-delay options, and reverse effects that can be achieved simply by setting the Gravity control to negative. Musicians even 'freeze' their reverb tail and lay it under the instrument's tone for an atmospheric backdrop. On top of that, the effect can be reshaped at the speed of light – filtered, modulated, or completely transformed using the expression pedal.

About Eventide

The US manufacturer Eventide is one of the pioneers of digital audio technology. The company has existed since the early 1970s and began with developments in the broadcasting sector and digital delay effects. As early as 1974 they unveiled the H910, a pitch shifter revolutionary at the time. The H3000 (1986) was milestone in the field of digital effects and was very popular with professional musicians in recording studios and live performances. The following generations of this model were ever more powerful and culminated in the current flagship H9000. Since 2007, Eventide has also been developing compact pedals, primarily for guitarists and keyboard players. To this day, Eventide's algorithms are considered among the best on the market.

Ambient cascades of sound

The Eventide Blackhole's generously outfitted control panel makes real-time shaping of its sound parameters quick and easy, with extra flexibility a breeze with a standard expression pedal. This reverb is a true master of the universe when it comes to unusual sounds – perfect for ambient textures, sprawling soundscapes, and creative SFX. Single notes cascade into galactic clouds of tone, layer upon layer of stunning sound that's almost a performance in its own right. With all these unique qualities, the Eventide pedal isn't just for guitarists and bassists – it's a space-age secret weapon for keyboard players, percussionists, any live perfomers really. Of course, it comes with the high level of audio quality musicians of all kinds have come to expect from Eventide.

Reverb with nuances

This pedal I use for analog synthesizers/drones. Some handy overlays indicate the various settings for presets such as Pulsar, Singularity, Nebula, Dark Matter, and of course Black Hole. All those names indeed do suggest what they seem. On more than one occasion I needed to throttle back the Mix and the Feedback knobs in order not to overdo some effects. Even at 50% they come out strong. The reverb is not the typical vintage raw hall style but rather nuanced like somewhat outerworld outerspace. The input is with a stereo TRS jack instead of two mono TS jacks which require clumsy fiddling with spiltter cables. With a special little knob the secondary functions can be set. But then in order to get the primary settings done, push that knob again and move a bit one of the knobs (Mix, for example) to get the whole thing settled. It's an undocumented feature, I guess. Minus point is that when the Mix knob is beyond 12 o'clock, when no sound is passed through, a hum is notiiceable. Other than that, it is a powerful pedal that works great on a snth.

d
beste reverb pedaal ooit
denzer 16.01.2022

A synth players review

I've installed the Blackhole plugin over a year ago and never used it, but decided to buy the pedal as well (cyberweek discount, couldn't resist) - I just prefer real knobs. It's found its place between my Minilogue and audio interface (thanks to its line level inputs), meaning I can experiment with reverbs without using plugings and even without launching my DAW.

It proved great company for my other reverb box, the NightverB. Both units have EQ but the Blackhole can also add resonance to the reverb, which makes it extra awesome. Same goes for the ghostly reversed reverb on the BH. If only it had the same amount of knobs as the NightverB...

Besides the BH and NV I think the Meris is the only other reverb box with line level inputs, so hopefully next Cyberweek...

More than a one trick pony.

This pedal is astonishing. Stepping on it make you realise that it’s not your typical reverb pedal. It’s just huge, powerful and atmospheric. The pedal itself makes adjusting the parameters quite simple. Connecting the pedal to your computer, which is a good idea, allows you access to other presets. These presets demonstrate the versatility of the algorithm. Although you can configure the pedal without the app, like setting tails after switching the pedal off or turning the buffer on and off, it’s just simpler to do so here.
The only downside for me is accessing the midi and this is just because I’m not used to midi. I’m trying to daisy chain it with other midi comparable pedals and I’m just finding it difficult to select the exact connections I need. I just wish the pedal that midi in and through 5 pin dins. Its just a bit more awkward but totally possible.
I’m absolutely delighted with this reverb.
