Entering a new era of Epiphone
The "Inspired by Gibson Custom" series has been created for guitarists who want top-tier instruments without the custom shop price tag. Designed by Epiphone's US Custom Shop team, the Epiphone 1963 Dove Reissue Natural IBC takes a legendary guitar and gives it a modern twist – with the premium specs to match. This square-shoulder dreadnought is, purely visually, one of the most impressive and imposing instruments in the Gibson catalogue, with a unique (and uniquely detailed) pickguard that has fascinated musicians the world over for decades. A Gibson Dove has always been known to be a strummer's dream, boasting an impressive level of volume thanks to the solid maple back and sides while still retaining a practically perfect balance of bass and treble. The roasted solid spruce top gives this vintage-style guitar a sound profile that will have even experienced listeners thinking it's been played regularly for years, and this incredible effect also comes across when the Hummingbird is amplified, as it is equipped with an LR Baggs VTC Bronze pickup system.
On the wings of a Dove
A Dove is a wonderful rhythm instrument with a loud, singing high end that is balanced beautifully by a solid bass foundation. The reduction in mid-range means that its frequencies don't step on the other instruments in the band, which is one of the most desirable results of using solid maple for the sides and back. The spruce top has X-bracing, allowing the timbre to mimic that of the vintage original even more closely. Of course, a sound this good needs playability to match, and this is provided by the 12" fingerboard radius and broader 42.9mm nut width, as well as the rounded mahogany neck. The longer scale length of 25.5" gives the Epiphone 1963 Dove Reissue Natural IBC a higher string tension that makes it well-suited to lower tunings and provides clearer note separation on the individual strings. All in all, an authentic Epiphone jumbo that ticks every box!
Make a statement on stage
Playing a Dove is quite the statement: It says that a musician has been looking for (and found!) something really special, an instrument that doesn't go with the flow. Of course, it also gets the job done and then some, mastering every challenge a working musician is ever likely to face – with that typical Dove-meets-maple sound, but at the fair prices for which Epiphone has become known. The LR Baggs VTC Bronze piezo pickup used here is also a great-sounding addition, with its discreetly integrated volume and tone controls providing a warm, authentic sound for acoustic sets live on stage. The Epiphone 1963 Dove Reissue Natural IBC thus represents successful revival of the vintage Gibson steel-string style of the early 1960s.
About Epiphone
Today, Epiphone is known only as the Asian budget offshoot of Gibson. Yet both companies were once independent, equal, and also bitter rivals. The roots of Epiphone go back to the 1870s and to Anastasios Stathopoulo, a Greek instrument maker, who emigrated to America in 1903 with his son Epaminondas ("Epi" for short). Epi changed the name of the firm to the "Epiphone Banjo Company" after taking over the family business in 1928. During this year, Epiphone also began to manufacture guitars, which rapidly came to dominate their sales. In 1957, Epiphone was taken over by C.M.I., which already included Gibson, but continued as a separate brand until 1970, when manufacturing was outsourced to Asia. Well-known Epiphone models include the Casino, played by the Beatles, and the Sheraton, John Lee Hooker's instrument of choice.
That classic vintage look
That instantly recognisable dove pickguard, the multi-ply two-tone binding, mother-of-pearl fingerboard inlays, waffleback machine heads, stunning deep red flamed maple on the sides, back and neck... just talking about the Epiphone 1963 Dove Reissue Natural IBC is enough to get guitar fans excited. And this classic, handcrafted Gibson-style dreadnought is available at a price far below what musicians would have to pay for a custom US-made Gibson. Thanks to its immediately comfortable playing feel and vintage-tinted matte finish, this guitar feels like an old friend the moment it's taken out of the (suitably premium) case that is included in the package. For bringing that authentic vintage 1960s feeling into the studio, onto the stage, or to the next songwriting session, this instrument is just the thing.
