An avalanche of reverb

The EarthQuaker Devices Avalanche Run V2 will cover a lot of things every guitarist wants or needs, from gentle, spacy sounds to soundscaping worlds. This pedal can be thought of as a natural evolution of the Dispatch Master, and delivers a combination of stereo reverb and delay with an array of features that no other single pedal is really capable of. Besides the standard vintage delay options and pleasantly modulated reverb, the Avalanche Run also has an impressive range of stereo features and a very capable DSP platform that can lift those classic effects to entirely new heights. The three main settings can be toggled using the pedal's smallest switch: There's Normal, for a classic combination of reverb and delay, as well as Reverse, which flips the delay, and Swell, which adds a dynamic volume swell to the sound. These options can all be minutely adjusted with a range of further controls.

Very user friendly

Any guitarist can dial in their own individual sound with the Avalanche Run's flexible array of parameters. One unusual feature is the buffer setting, which allows the trail lengths to be adjusted even after the effect is switched off, giving adventurous soundscapers huge freedom in how they shape their sounds – it's ideal for lo-fi looping experiments, for instance. Fundamentally, the EarthQuaker Devices Avalanche Run can be used in one of its six different expression pedal modes, all of which give musicians specific parameters for fine-tuning the delay or reverb effects. There's also a tap tempo footswitch and a setting for a variety of delay rhythms, making it flexible enough to be used differently for each passage of a single track. All in all, the EarthQuaker Devices Avalanche Run V2 will impress even expert sound surfers with its flexibility and user-friendly interface.

Way beyond the mountaintops...

The EarthQuaker Devices Avalanche Run V2 isn't just for guitarists working on experimental or ambient projects – it's sure to find a thousand uses in the setup of almost anyone who plays with sound. The stereo combination of a modulated reverb and an adjustable delay – in terms of sound, somewhere between pure tape delay and grittier bucket brigade vibes – is extremely adaptable without ever being overwhelmingly complex. Of course, with a palette of features this varied, there is something of a learning curve, especially if the goal is to use the Avalanche Run to execute a specific plan, but it still remains much more accessible than other pedals with comparable functionality.

About EarthQuaker Devices

EarthQuaker Devices was founded in 2004 by the musician Jamie Stillman, who had previously gathered years of experience in the world of music and sounds as the manager of a record label for Metal, Punk, and Shoegaze bands. Today, his innovative pedal designs are among the most in-demand and desirable devices in the boutique segment, attracting interest from a huge community of musicians. Stillman is now in charge of a sizeable team of developers and technicians, who are continuously working from their base in Akron, Ohio to expand their catalogue of hand-made effects pedals. EarthQuaker Devices are used by renowned artists like Paul Simon, Coldplay, Tom Bukovac, Idles, and The Black Keys.

Next generation

Its sonic capabilities are not the only thing that makes the EarthQuaker Devices Avalanche Run V2 so special – its usability also makes it well-suited to the needs of modern musicians. It combines noiseless, relay-based circuitry with a soft-touch footswitch, and has an optional true bypass function so that it can leave the original sound as-is if it's switched off (in Trail mode, the signal is buffered and the true bypass is deactivated). With its many expression options for delay and reverb, and its all-round flexibility, the Avalanche Run is immensely useful both in the studio and on stage, as well as bringing the robust, all-American build quality to the table for which all EarthQuakers are famous. The pedal is compatible with any high-grade 9V pedalboard power supply, although it draws quite a lot of power, at 425mA.

50% delay, 50% reverb, 100% atmosfeer

Teunvanirsel 09.11.2018

An ambient machine. Also for synths.
Lapi 01.10.2019
I use it with synths, guitar and as external fx in DAW.
Imagine to have two pedals with extras.

DELAY. 4 knobs: time, repeat (builds infinitely after 3 o'clock), tone (vibe changes) dry wet.
1 lever: 3 modes (swell is really cool).
Really interesting to create loops, evolving soundscapes, weird spinning noises.
Season everything with the REVERB (2 knobs, dry wet, decay)
and you'll be in a wood, when snow falls and sound is muffled. Sometimes a fox will show up.

You'll find also a Ratio of delay and EXP knob.
EXP sets which parameter you can control with the expression pedal (not included). You can do really weird stuff with that e.g. glitches, bend time and even do pseudo strings layered together. Extra fun.

A bit tricky the access to TAIL mode (aka: allowing the wet signal to fade after the unit is switched off) that requires a combination of disconnecting the 9V, setting the ratio switch to the target tail length, pressing the Activate switch, reconnect...
Also, keep in mind that is not a stereo effect but stereo through (that is cool in any case).

Final verdict? Satisfied not only for the good sounds and creative potential but also for the build quality, graphics (so beautiful that you'll regret any scratch) and un-boxing experience.

Weird, deep, scary and magical
Jackfisher 06.01.2019
The EQD Avalanche run is not a typical delay pedal, it's a mix of a delay and reverb, but it's none of them at the same time.

I had a hard time finding more uses for this outside of ambient and drones, but EQD pedals are not knows are your grand dad's effects pedal, that's what companies like Boss and TC electronic are for.
The avalanche run has three main mods, normal (literally), swell (magic), and reverse (the weird but great!).

The pedal like all of EQD is true bypass, so I didn't find any impact on my overall sound, and pairing it with a reverb (in my case the Afterneath V2) creates sounds that you didn't even know existed.

But this pedal is not for everyone, if you just need a classic digital delay, just get a flashback 2 for a third of the price.
The Avalanche run is for ambient and drones.

Why buy it?
-You like ambient sounds and drones
-You like to experiment and sound huge

Why not?
A few problems with the pedal are the fact that to get the most out of it, you do need an expression pedal, you don't have to, but it is recommended.
Another unfortunate problem I've encountered with my unite, is the fact that it's a bit of a snob when it comes to power, as it tried to kill my ears when I powered it with my cheap Chinese power brick that powered the rest of my pedals with no effort or problem, and this pedal as most EQD pedals does not have a battery option, so you have to stick to a single adapter or a more expensive PSU.
Not your grand dad's delay pedal.
