The Drawmer FC1 FET Compressor is a fully featured mono compressor in the 500 Series lunchbox format, available at a remarkably accessible price. Occupying a full-width module slot, it's based on the circuitry of Drawmer's 1970 series, uses field-effect transistors (FETs), and incorporates a soft transition around the threshold region for smooth soft-knee compression. Alongside its fast attack and release characteristics, the FC1 features a dedicated Dry/Wet control for parallel compression directly within the unit. Beyond that, the two functions Big and Air are designed to provide a fuller low-end foundation and greater transparency, respectively, while the Crush feature introduces additional harmonic content for extra warmth and character.

First and foremost, the Drawmer FC1 delivers the distinctive Drawmer sound associated with the 1970 series. As such, producers can look forward to crisp and quick – and yet surprisingly subtle – FET compression. Thanks to the stepped controls, previous settings can always be reproduced accurately by hand. The Link function also extends the FC1's usefulness beyond individual sources, allowing stereo signals and subgroups to benefit from the same balanced characteristics. Both the core circuitry and the Big, Air, and Crush voicing options contribute to a decisive, characterful sound. Transients remain intact, while the compressor adds the punch and bite needed to give a specific source real weight in a mix. The Crush function is especially effective here, using harmonic saturation to increase presence and improve audibility within a dense arrangement. The dedicated Bypass button makes rapid comparisons easy by completely removing the circuit from the signal path.

With variable attack and release controls, the Drawmer FC1 can be matched precisely to the incoming signal. The Big and Air functions are derived from Drawmer's three-band 1973 compressor: Big works by reducing detector sensitivity in the low frequencies, allowing the bass range to remain more prominent, creating additional weight, reducing unwanted pumping, and contributing to a more natural compression response. The Air function serves to restore high-frequency content that may be diminished during the compression process, bringing back openness, clarity, and enhanced transparency. This is especially useful for improving lyrical intelligibility and for preserving the brightness and impact of cymbals.
