A quick tune down

Drop tunings have long been used to create a deeper, heavier sound, especially in genres like Metal, Hard Rock, and Doom. However, for those without a seven-string or baritone guitar, adjusting their standard guitar can be laborious process, particularly when drop tunings are only occasionally required. This is where Digitech's The Drop comes in. The polyphonic pedal enables guitars to be detuned by transposing the guitar signal in real time in 24-bit resolution and with a 44.1kHz sampling rate. To use The Drop, users need to simply turn the Effect Selector knob to the desired drop tuning interval, from one semitone all the way down to a full octave. The additional Momentary switch is then responsible for selecting the desired operating mode. Thanks to these intuitive controls, drop tunings can be quickly achieved without having to change instruments or adjust the strings.

No need for a capo

At the touch of a button, the polyphonic pitch shifter in Digitech's The Drop transposes down the guitar signal, with a wealth of drop tuning options, ranging from one semitone all the way down to one octave, provided by the pedal's Effect Selector knob. Individual LEDs indicate which detuning interval has been selected, and the pedal converts the signal instantly and without latency. Depending on the position of the additional Momentary switch, switching is either permanent or only when the footswitch is engaged. If the effect is deactivated, a true bypass circuit ensures that the signal is passed on without any conversion.

Gekocht om mee te prutsen, nu een vaste waarde

Zoals de titel reeds aangeeft had ik dit pedaal eerst gekocht om thuis wat mee te klooien. Intussen is het echter een vaste waarde geworden op mijnpedaltrain.

De draaiknop waarmee ja per half step naar beneden stemt is gevoelig genoeg om met de voet bediend te worden, maar niet zo gevoelig dat je meteen 5 stappen verder draait.

De flipswitch zorgt ervoor dat de stemming enkel veranderd wanneer jij het het pedaal ingeduwd houdt i.p.v. enkel aan of uit te staan wanneer je het pedaal aanzet.

Ik was aangenaam verrast door het feit dat er geen hoorbare vertraging op het geluid zat. De omzetting van toon gebeurt onmiddellijk.

Een minpuntje kan zijn dat je, naarmate je lager stemt, wat volume verliest. Alleszins niks wat een compressor of een draai aan de volumeknop van de amp niet op kan lossen.

Een veelgestelde vraag van mensen die ik ken is of het mogelijk is van een standard tuning naar een drop tuning te gaan d.m.v. het pedaal. Uiteraard is dit niet het geval, alle snaren worden samen van stemming veranderd.

Best in class, but not superb

Build quality is solid and controls speak for themselves, performs best when placed first in the effects chain.

Tracking on this unit is far better than that of the EHX Pitchfork and Morpheus Droptune. The pitch shifting itself is also better and more natural sounding than that of the other two pedals.

Overall you will notice some loss of top end sparkle and volume, this is easily compensated for by placing an EQ pedal after the Drop.

Tuning down further than five half steps you will start to hear some artifacts and the sound becomes somewhat garbled, this especially noticable when playing clean. The usable range for bass guitar is three half steps at most.

Perfectly useable on stage for bass (limited) and rhythm guitar, not so much for leads and studio use.

Ik had van andere gitaristen gehoord dat dit een topper was, ik speel namelijk veel in andere tuning, in eerste instantie was ik wel blij verrast, maar na wat minuten gespeeld te hebben, zaten er toch bubbelingen in de sound, zonde want op zich is het geen slecht pedaal, maar wil wel een strak geluid, het is ook zo, hij gaat met halve noten naar beneden, dat de eerste 3 drops, redelijk zijn, hoe meer drops, hoe slechter de sound, je kan hem doormiddel van een draaiknop droppen, dus dan kan je maar 1 stand gebruiken, ik had liever gehad dat je hem per half naar beneden kon trappen, al met al is het zeker geen slecht pedaal, ik had er alleen meer van verwacht, that's all
