Boss RE-202 Space Echo Delay/Reverb

De twee redenen waarom ik de RE-202 al na een dag heb geretourneerd:

1) MIDI clock werkt wel, maar genereert enkel kwartnoten. Noch de HEAD noch de REPEAT-knop verandert het interval. Je kunt de MIDI clock natuurlijk uitzetten (op de RE-202 of via je DAW), dan heb je wél beschikking over alle verschillende delay-intervallen - maar ik ben een MIDI-man.

2) Omdat m'n audiointerface slechts één set extra outputs heeft, wilde ik de RE-202 'ketenen' aan m'n reverbdoosje, maar als je de RE-202 op 'full wet' zet (oftewel DRY OFF), wordt het droge signaal zelfs als de RE-202 uit staat niet doorgesluisd naar het volgende kastje in de keten. Dus in mijn geval ontving my reverbdoosje enkel de echo's/delays van de RE202, oftewel het wet signal - dat wil ik niet. Met andere woorden: de RE-202 mist een true bypass, dus kun je 'm niet ketenen aan andere effectdoosjes.

Ik heb nu de Eventide Timefactor besteld - ben zéér benieuwd... Check binnenkort mijn review aldaar :-)

Most beautiful looking space echo pedal out there. This pedal has a lot to offer.

The strongest points :
It makes all those little mechanical tape engine noises like there is a real fysical engine inside it. Very nice modeling job ! The most spacey on the market.
It has a preamp with separate saturation control.
The twist and especially the warp knobs are great. The warp knob is the reason I prefer this over the RE-2 (only twist function). It holds and expands the sound in a beautiful way without getting too loud.
There is also a similar warp knob on the DD6 and DD8, but it works a lot better with the 'dirty' Space Echo.
The 4th tape head also offers usefull extra sounds.
The other reverb modes (hall, ..) and 2s delay option give more ambient possibilities.

The repeats don't hug the direct sound that much as other pedals (NUX, GALAXY, ...). The preamp has some presence in it that I don't like enough to use it on its own. But it fits the effect sound perfectly.
The digital preamp can't compete with my Belle Epoche analog pre-amp, wich is the most juicy delay preamp in a pedal on the market.
Very important for me : the expression mode. A little easier to use compared to the RE-2 (no pulling out plugs, remembering number 10). But it has the same not so userfriendly set-up rules where you have to arrange every knob again. The knobs you set for heel down give not the starting sound for toe down. Very annoying. Here NUX Tape Echo is a lot more userfriendly and is organised for three single parameters.


If you just want the basic space echo sound, there are cheaper options like the Re2 or the Nux tape echo. But for the whole package and that marvellous warp, this is a good option with the most spacey repeats ever. If you don't like that more separate effect sound, the Volante, Nux or definitely the new UAFX Galaxy pedal can be a better choice. For the warp algorythm Boss is unbeatable.

I always struggled to find the delay pedal with the right sound and the ergonomic that suited me. It seems that this one is the good one for me. Sound-wise, we are in tape delay territory, not as clean as digital delay, but brighter than analog. The sound can be tuned with separate bass and treble control, that's a plus. It is possible to emulate a used tape to get a darker tone. The reverb sounds are nice, but I would not use them as my main source of reverb.
I have never played the original Space Echo, but this is as close as how I imagine it would sound. One manual mode and 4 presets give me enough variations on the fly. The layout is much more friendly than the one one the Re-2. Only minor negative point is that I need to refer to the manual when I need to get to the "hidden" settings.
All in all, a great pedal.
