A very pleasant surprise

It might not be as sexy as a fancy boutique module that works "intuitive" (what usually means that due to the design anyone without any talent can get a "cReAtIvE" sound from those and you still will be unique because due to the crazy price only a few dozens of these modules will be sold). But it's decent sounding and even more incredibly versatile which gives you the possibility to be creative yourself (whaaaaat?). To be honest: the ridiculous low price was a big factor for me to order this along with a other module from the same serie. I just wanted to give it a try if it would sound significantly different from the other "basic" VCO's in my rack. And it actually could replace most of them.

Don't get fooled by the so called innovative overpriced oscillator modules. This is what you need. This is your reference.

Only small negative remark: it could easily have been a bit smaller. I don't like those modules so small that I need a pencil sharper for my fingers to be able to control those. But this should have easily been designed a bit smaller whilst having all controls and connections still accessible.

Inspirerende VCO

Na de positieve ervaring met de modamp uit deze serie ben ik overgegaan tot het bouwen van een complete setup. Ik heb daarvoor 6 stuks van deze oscillator gekocht, ook dat de serie geen aparte LFO kent in de huidige line up. De bediening is even wennen, de polariteit van sommige waveforms is soms anders dan initieel verwacht, maar de hiermee te produceren klanken zijn echt anders dan anders. Hopelijk gaan ze ook de andere smaakjes van deze oscillator ooit nog eens uitbrengen, en dan zou mijn advies zijn: maak alle 2500 modules iets breder, zodat je aan de rechterzijde genoeg plaats hebt voor een aantal extra in en uitgangen. Dat de modules daardoor waarschijnlijk iets duurder uitvallen is wat mij betreft niet echt een bezwaar. Er valt natuurlijk op dit prijsniveau sowieso weinig op af te dingen.

Having waited for a long while for my 4 oscillators and also having read the previous review, I found that my oscillators track well, maybe they've fixed the problem. There is a preset on the back which allows the user to fine tune the tracking .

The overall build quality is excellent especially considering the price. The controls have a feel of quality even if, behind the panel, they are tiny.

Sound: I used one of the original ARP 2500 systems in the 1970s and I knew what I wanted to hear. These small, cheap oscillators deliver. By using them with the other modules in the range you can hear some of the characteristics of the original 2500 in general and I am happy with that. The only thing missing is some of the noise which came from all those matrix switches but unless you are wanting it, it's no problem.

Summing up: Great value. Authentic sound. Reasonably authentic handling. Did I mention great value?

If you get more that one get ready to crack it open to get the calibrations to match across the set. Other than that it’s a huge vco with tons of character!
