Key features of the Avid S1 include high-resolution 100mm motorised faders and touch-sensitive push encoders on each channel. Track assignment is handled intuitively through touch selection on a tablet, making it especially efficient in large sessions where instruments can be organised into banks. This allows entire groups such as drums, guitars or backing vocals to be quickly mapped to the faders without complex navigation. The push encoders provide direct access to essential channel controls like panning and send levels, while also enabling deeper parameter control when used in combination, including insert effects and third-party plugins. Many core functions remain accessible even when the S1 is used independently without a tablet.

Avid is one of the world's leading manufacturers of audio and video software as well as the related hardware. The first core product from the company, which was founded in the USA in 1987, was the Avid Media Composer, which, as software for non-linear video editing, was the first to digitalise film material and remains one of the industry standards to this day.
