The Magnificent Seven
The Audix DP7 is a complete seven-microphone drum kit package for stage and studio use, manufactured in the USA and built around the standard five-piece-plus-overheads configuration. Five dynamic microphones, each featuring Audix's VLM diaphragm, handle close-miking of the shells – kick drum, snare, two rack toms, and floor tom – delivering a clear, detailed picture of fast transients, even at high SPLs. The pair of small-diaphragm ADX51 condenser microphones are designed for use as overheads, capturing the high-end shimmer of the cymbals and "glueing together" the drumkit as a whole. The set neatly packs into its sturdy aluminium road case alongside a full complement of mounting hardware: four DVICE rim mounts, three DCLIP clips, one MC1 clip, and two WS81C windscreens – everything needed to mic a standard kit straight from the case.
Aggressive yet balanced
The microphones in the DP7 set are designed to work together as a coherent whole, capturing a modern sound character well-suited to aggressive playing styles – Rock and Metal in particular. The D6 on kick delivers low-end punch alongside upper-range attack, its heavily contoured response doing most of the character work without EQ. The D2 and D4's tailored dynamics naturally handle rack and floor toms respectively, and are both compact enough to be positioned safely and with precision using the included DVICE rim mounts. On snare, the i5 takes a fuller, more classic approach – less aggressive than a mid-forward dynamic such as an SM57, with more body in the low end. The pair of ADX51 overheads create the overall stereo image, adding space and upper-end detail to the otherwise tightly focused dynamic mics – pulling the individual close-mic channels into a coherent, room-aware picture of the full kit.
Hard-working harmony
The Audix DP7 suits drummers and engineers looking for a purpose-matched set of microphones suitable for both live work and recording – mics designed to work as an ensemble, covering the full kit, and handling the volume levels that modern drum production requires. Buying the seven microphones individually – D6, i5, two D2s, D4, and two ADX51s – alongside mounting hardware and a road case would represent a significantly higher outlay than the kit price, and without the assurance of consistent voicing across the set. For drummers building a mic collection from scratch, or engineers adding dedicated drum coverage to an existing setup, the DP7 is a more practical and cost-effective starting point than assembling the equivalent piece by piece.
About Audix
Audix is a US microphone manufacturer which was founded in 1984. The small company has its headquarters in Wilsonville, Oregon and offers a wide selection of microphones – both for the recording studio and for live use. The range of products extends from instrument microphones, such as those from the well-known D series, to vocal microphones with complete wireless systems. The company's remit goes beyond the music industry, however, since it also provides lavalier microphones, console microphones, and other devices for permanent installation. Audix also produces headphones and various microphone accessories, such as stands and XLR cables.
On their own or in concert
Each microphone in the Audix DP7 set also performs convincingly outside its primary drum role. The i5 and D2 are well-established alternatives for guitar cabinets – the i5's open character and presence boost suit electric guitars cleanly, while the D2's scooped response pairs well with a mid-forward mic for a dense, balanced guitar sound. The D4 and D6 translate directly to bass amp miking, where their extended low-frequency responses and high SPL handling are equally relevant. The ADX51 suits acoustic instruments where high-frequency detail defines the character of the sound – flutes, mandolins, and bowed strings among them. In live settings, the dynamic mics' low sensitivity keeps feedback under control on loud stages, and the DVICE rim mounts keep the capsules clear of even the most energetic playing.
