Compact pad controller and step sequencer

Arturia's BeatStep is a compact USB/MIDI controller that combines 16 velocity- and pressure-sensitive pads with a built-in step sequencer. Designed for hybrid studio and live setups, it functions as a drum pad controller, MIDI control surface, and analogue-style step sequencer in a streamlined format. Sixteen endless rotary encoders, a central data encoder, and dedicated transport buttons provide immediate access to sequencing and performance functions. Beyond traditional pad control, BeatStep integrates melodic sequencing and hardware control into a single portable unit.

Dual-mode workflow

BeatStep operates in two distinct modes: CNTRL mode for MIDI control and SEQ mode for step sequencing, indicated by colour-coded pad illumination. In controller mode, the pads and encoders transmit MIDI notes, CC messages, program changes, or MMC commands, enabling direct control of DAWs, virtual instruments or external hardware. In sequencer mode, the 16 pads represent steps within a pattern, while the encoders define pitch for each step across a multi-octave range. Scale quantisation restricts note selection to predefined scales, facilitating the quick creation of melodic patterns and maintaining harmonic coherence. Up to 16 sequences can be stored internally and recalled instantly.

Hands-on pattern creation

The sequencer delivers a classic step-based workflow with selectable playback directions and multiple time divisions. Patterns can be transposed in real time, shortened from their default 16-step length, or reshaped by adjusting pitch directly via the semitone-notched encoders, allowing intervals to be dialled in intuitively while a sequence is running. Switching modes preserves playback continuity, enabling simultaneous pattern execution and parameter control. Drum triggering, synth control, and melodic sequencing all operate concurrently – ideal for live performance and dynamic studio work.

About Arturia

Arturia's success story began with software emulations of well-known analogue synthesizers such as the Moog Minimoog, Sequential Prophet-5, and Oberheim SEM. The popular software instruments included in the V Collection are still flagship products of the French developer today. Over time, Arturia has gradually expanded its range and now also offers a host of hardware devices, ranging from synthesizers and keyboard controllers to sequencers. Since then, the former software developer has thus also become a household name in the world of analogue synthesizers and other equipment.

Hybrid connectivity and flexible configuration

BeatStep integrates easily into computer-based and hardware environments. USB provides class-compliant MIDI communication and bus power, while a dedicated MIDI output and CV/Gate outputs allow direct control of external synthesizers and modular systems using standard 1V/octave pitch and gate signals. The MIDI Control Center software allows for deep configuration of pad assignments, encoder behaviour, scale definitions and preset management, adapting the BeatStep to a wide range of workflows.

CV output min-max voltage beperkt

Helaas gaat de CV output maar van 2V tot 6V wat betekend dat je maar een beperkt aantal notes tot je beschikking hebt en voor mij de reden om hem te retourneren. Via MIDI werkt hij uiteraard prima.

Price breakthrough, well made
Andro 16.08.2014
You will probably find very little criticism aimed at this little thing. It actually offers three devices in one: Midi controller with pads and knobs, step sequencer and USB midi to CV converter. All that for less than 100 euros is a small miracle. And you cannot see it in the build quality, BeatStep looks and feels very well made, and really solid.

The majority of BeatStep users, including me, has been drawn by its step sequencer with CV outs. However, I can see that most of people are perhaps a bit overenthusiastic when it comes to step sequencing over CV. BeatStep is one-channel sequencer and that means you can control only one signal, either pitch or filter or amp. Lot of times this is not enough. Step sequencing often benefits greatly from "accents" which are either built into sequencer as a function (XOX style) or there is separate channel for filter CV, amp CV, or ideally, both. That is why professional CV sequencers have three channels.

You can come around this by using a couple of (ideally three) BeatSteps in parallel. Maybe not very elegant solution, but still much cheaper than any other alternative. Because, if you want to go all the way into old school step sequencing, you will need something like Doepfer MAQ 16/3, or at least Dark Time (8 steps, two channels). And for that money you can buy handful of BeatSteps.

So, if you want to start exploring old school step sequencing, or to try connecting your pre-midi synth to the midi world, BeatStep is currently the best starting point by far. But, once you would want to add some nuance by controlling either the filter or ampllifier section, you will need to upgrade. For that reason only I am giving one star less than the maximum score.

fun on a stick
ben1210 19.06.2014
Great bit of kit, tons of inspiration but a couple of minor issues...

Build is good for the price but one slightly wobbly encoder (#9), one pad needs a bit more of a bash to register than the rest (#16) and the grey trim on the left end panel sits slightly proud of the base leaving it prone to chipping off. Also, the scaling of the encoders in controller mode is great for fine control but takes several complete turns to go through the full range. This makes it less useful for filter sweeps etc.

All of these issues are outweighed by the sheer fun of using the device. The step sequencer in particular is the best bit of kit i have encountered for generating musical ideas. I'm really looking forward to using the Beatstep in the context of a live performance, it gives you the chance to make evolving sequences on the fly and in that respect beats a static arpeggiator hands down. If you've got and analogue synth, buy one. If you're bored of mousing things into a piano roll, buy one. The most (legal) fun you can have for less than £100!

cheapest good sequencer + midi to cv for eurorack
Anoniem 21.01.2017
Lots of really useful features such as the sequencer and midi to cv. Sequencer can have diffrent scales so it like having a quantiser on the unit. I can now easily have my moduler system take signals from my DAW and there are many feature I have not yet had the chance to use. Great product at a really good price. It can be a little hard to get to grips with since there is menu diving for most of the features and there is no screen but at this price im not real complaning. The pro look great if you have a larger moduler system or multiple synths but if like me you only have a small system this will do the job perfectly.
