Mini sampling studio with serious power

The blackbox 2 is the next generation of 1010music's pocket-sized standalone sampling studios, combining sampling, recording, sequencing, and clip launching in a battery-powered unit with a high-resolution 4" touchscreen. Four configurable tracks can operate as One-Shot, Loop, Slicer, Multisample, Shredder, or External Instrument, programmable via step sequencer, piano roll, or probability sequencing. Loops, complete songs, or continuous audio recordings of up to four hours are stored directly to a microSD card, which ships pre-loaded with over 140 patches and 6,800 sample files. Despite its small footprint, the blackbox 2 carries the Launch, Scene, Song, Mixer, and effects functions familiar from the 1010music bento, allowing complete tracks or live sets to be organised and performed entirely within the device.

The bento, shrunk

Resembling a miniaturised version of the flagship bento, the blackbox 2 inherits much of its architecture, including its intuitive touchscreen workflow, advanced sample engine, and performance-oriented controls. Resampling, live looping, automated multisample creation, and USB audio streaming extend its creative possibilities, while comprehensive MIDI integration with MIDI CC support provides remote access to deeper parameters. A dedicated suite of DJ effects – Filter, Echo, Gate, Flanger, Bitcrusher, and Repeater – can be manipulated in real time using the touchscreen's XY controls, making them particularly useful for shaping transitions and live performances. With individual clip launching, BPM matching, and synchronised loop groups, the blackbox 2 brings an Ableton Live-style approach to arranging and performing without a computer.

Processing power and connectivity

The blackbox 2 delivers approximately twice the processing power of the original blackbox in a remarkably small, portable unit. Its bento-derived workflow and expanded sampling capabilities make it a versatile centrepiece for DAW-less setups, functioning as a sampling and sequencing hub for external hardware, a standalone drum sampler, a live recorder, or a player for loops, stems, and custom multisample instruments. A stereo input, three stereo outputs, and a dedicated headphone output – all on 3.5mm mini jacks – provide extensive audio routing options, while MIDI and analogue clock inputs and outputs allow synchronisation with grooveboxes, sequencers, and modular systems.

One device, many roles

In the studio, the 1010music blackbox 2 can record synthesizers, drum machines, or guitar setups, capture loops in real time, and develop them into complete arrangements using its sequencing and clip-launching functions. In a hardware rig, it can coordinate samples, loops, and external instruments alongside MIDI keyboards, grooveboxes, and other sound sources. Live performers can organise material into scenes and complete songs, then use clip launching and the XY-controlled DJ effects to reshape arrangements and create dynamic transitions. The integrated USB battery provides up to four hours of standalone operation – enough for a live set or a nomadic composition session without mains power. Automatic multisample creation also makes it possible to take favourite synthesizer sounds on the road without bringing the original instruments.

About 1010music

1010music was founded in Los Angeles in 2016 and focuses on digital solutions for musical applications. Prior to creating their own products, the developers at 1010music had all worked for renowned companies on large software projects such as Native Instrument’s Traktor DJ. 1010music’s creative modules – designed for the Eurorack modular systems such as samplers, loopers, sequencers, synthesizers and effects – combine digital technology with analogue controls and are operated via multifunctional touch displays.

Automatic synthesizer sampling

The 1010music blackbox 2 can automatically sample a synthesizer across its full range, saving the results as a playable multisample instrument. Reproducing a synthesizer patch convincingly requires many different notes to be captured across multiple octaves – a process that can be slow and painstaking when performed manually. Here, the source is simply connected to the blackbox 2's MIDI output and audio input, the desired note lengths and intervals specified, and the device then handles the entire sampling process automatically. Once complete, the new preset can be saved before moving on to the next source. Both hardware synthesizers and software instruments can be sampled, provided the appropriate MIDI and audio connections are available.
