A semihollow with a modern twist

Warwick RB Star Bass 4 SBHP, semihollow bass guitar

The Warwick RB Star Bass 4 SBHP blends a classic semi-hollow aesthetic with modern hardware and an easy-to-play, medium-scale neck. Its body is crafted from maple, seen here in Warwick's timeless Solid Black High Polish finish, which gives the bass both a striking visual presence and a resonant tonal response. The three-piece maple neck – stabilised with its ekanga veneer stripes – combines with the wenge fingerboard to produce a crisp, articulate tone with very balanced sustain. Outfitted with passive MEC Vintage single coils, the RB Star Bass 4 gives bassists access to a wide range of organic tones, from warm-sounding retro basslines to tight, modern grooves. Weighing in at around 3.8kg, it feels invitingly light and well-balanced – ideal for extended rehearsals and long sets on stage.

Control and character

Two passive MEC Vintage single coils give the Warwick Star Bass 4 its defined tonal core, delivering a detailed response with an organic character. A three-way toggle switch allows experienced or experimenting bassists to select neck, bridge, or blended pickup configurations, while dual volume and tone controls enable them to precisely shape their sound's dynamics and timbre. The 813mm medium-scale length, combined with the wenge fingerboard and 21 extra-tall nickel-silver jumbo frets, ensures smooth playability and accurate intonation. The two-piece Warwick bridge and tailpiece construction in turn makes it easy to adjust the string action, while the Tedur Just-A-Nut III and robust Warwick machine heads help with both stable tuning and clean intonation. Security locks and a gig bag are included, so the Star Bass is stage-ready right out of the box.

For bassists with a sense of style

The Warwick RB Star Bass 4 is ideal for bassists looking to combine the unmistakable character of a semihollow instrument with the accessibility of a medium scale length fingerboard. It's a perfect match for players who want to hear those classic retro tones but are keen on some modern reliability too – indeed, for all bassists in need of a lightweight yet fully featured instrument for extended sessions and long performances. With its passive electronics, balanced ergonomic profile, and distinctive sound, it's a great option for style-conscious musicians, offering a host of characteristics that solid-body instruments just can't match – and all this in Warwick's familiar quality and at a price point that's refreshingly fair.

About Warwick

Based in Markneukirchen, Saxony, Warwick, initially a manufacturer of premium basses, is known today for providing a wide range of music equipment in all sectors of the industry. The product range extends from bass guitars, bass amplifiers and cabinets (in all price brackets), bass strings and accessories, to effects units. In addition to this core business, the Warwick Distribution sales company offers almost everything that bass players, whether of four, six or even more string instruments, could require. Among them are the instruments of the Framus brand, which are remarkable for their consistently high quality. In addition to its headquarters in Markneukirchen, Warwick also has locations in Nashville and Shanghai.

There's a Star Bass waiting to be heard

With its warm, resonant semihollow sound and classic pickup configuration, the Warwick RB Star Bass 4 is a fine choice for a wide range of musical applications. Whether it’s warm, stylish basslines in Jazz, Soul, and Fusion, or dynamic grooves in Pop, Indie, and singer-songwriter arrangements – the Star Bass 4 brings a distinctive voice to the mix, one that offers something quite unlike traditional solid-body basses. Its lightweight build and ergonomic handling make it a natural choice for extended studio sessions, marathon rehearsals, and long nights on stage. Whether paired with a classic tube amp or a modern Class D head, it always brings it characteristic sound to the mix, while remaining consistently transparent in tone and easy to dial in. And thanks to the included gig bag and security locks mentioned above, there's nothing standing in the way of that first performance.

Very cool Bass
JimMan31 12.11.2021
I hesitated between this Warwick Bass and the Hagstrom Viking Bass but went for this as I'm a fan of Warwick Basses even though this is made in China, not Germany.
After reading some negative comments on quality I took the chance knowing that Thomann are great on returned items if you're not happy. My example arrived and is well finished and set up out of the box. The only very minor negative comment I can make is that the finish is perhaps very slightly lined from the buffing stage but it's hardly noticeable and anyway my belt buckle will soon make worse marks in the varnish than that. The wiring could be slightly better aesthetically if loomed a little longer so as not to be visible through the f-holes. Otherwise it plays and sounds great with a gnarly passive sound and looks fantastic. The Warwick Reds strings as fitted are not my favorite but are better than they should be for the price so I'll change them when they need it. Although the Bass is listed as no gigbag included, mine came inside a rockbag, inside the box. This provides added protection for shipment but is way too light for a fragile semi IMHO so I also ordered a Gator GW 335 deluxe hard case which fits perfectly.
After a few weeks, I again mention the finish as being Black every mark shows. The finish, particularly on the back of the Bass lines very easily which may be due to the spray lacquer used.
