A metronome worn on the wrist

The metronome is now an indispensable device in the everyday life of musicians. Accurate timing is vital not only when practising an instrument, but also whenever looping or sequencing is required - and that's where the metronome comes in handy. While most of these devices give an acoustic signal, Soundbrenner takes a different approach and introduces metronomes that use vibration to trigger a pulse signal. The Soundbrenner Pulse is one of these, which - like a watch - can be worn on the wrist, but also at other points on the body. For this purpose, straps in different lengths are provided. In order to fully exploit the metronome's full potential, the manufacturer offers the free Soundbrenner Metronome app for iOS and Android.

Good vibrations

The housing of the Soundbrenner Pulse measures five centimetres in diameter and is strapped to the body - usually around the wrist. According to Soundbrenner, the vibration is much stronger than that of a mobile phone, and the user can set the tempo via a rotating ring or by tapping several times on the touch-sensitive surface featuring an illuminated Soundbrenner logo - which incidentally is how the vibration is started and stopped. It's possible to connect to the app via Bluetooth, allowing the user to control the Pulse remotely, but it also offers storage options and playlist management, among other things. The Soundbrenner DAW Tools app is also supported by Mac OSX and can be used for MIDI control via DAW software.

Practice without background noise

The monotonous sound of a metronome can spoil the fun of practising, as the noise often sounds anything but pleasant and can be heard during performance. The Soundbrenner Pulse allows practising musicians to concentrate fully on their instruments sound, be it a piano, a violin, a guitar, or a drum set. Live performers can also benefit greatly from the Soundbrenner Pulse whenever precise timing is of the essence, such as when playing along with recordings or when trying to avoid messing up the tempo during a fast-paced live performance.

About Soundbrenner

"Soundbrenner was founded in Berlin in 2014 by Florian Simmendinger and Julian Vogels. The Soundbrenner Pulse, a vibrating metronome that can be worn on the wrist, ankle, or on the body, was launched in 2016 with the help of a crowdfunding campaign. A production facility was opened in Hong Kong for the device's manufacture, while development still takes place in Berlin. In 2019, after another successful crowdfunding campaign, the Soundbrenner Core was presented, which retained the proven concept but was enhanced with a few new features. Since then, the portfolio has been expanded to include other products such as the Stomp, a Bluetooth foot controller.

"

Perfect timing when practising or on stage

Whereas in the past, pianists had to place a brutally loud, heavy wooden metronome on the instrument to practise their playing, present-day solutions are far more elegant and, above all, noiseless thanks to the Soundbrenner Pulse. A gentle or optionally stronger vibration makes the pulse physically perceptible and allows for an undisturbed musical performance without unwanted background noise. In live settings, the Soundbrenner Pulse comes in handy as well: For instance, drummers can create a concert playlist that allows them to play every song at exactly the right tempo. Thanks to the sync function, every single band member can be fitted with a Soundbrenner, guaranteeing precise timing at every gig.

I’ve decided to redo the review in English to reach a broader audience – and because many existing reviews are outdated based on the older model with a charging tray. In the meantime, Soundbrenner has made many updates to the software – you can turn the sound and/or the light on or off – you can change the strength and format of the trill – overall, the company listens to the users and addresses shortcoming. But there are drawbacks as well:

1) the phone application does not work on older Android versions (check in Google Play before you order – or you have to get a new phone too)

2) the charging tray has been replaced by a charging cable that magnetically attached to the Soundbrenner Pulse unit. Unfortunately the cable is a bit stiff and detaches easily. Both not big issues as long as you are aware of them. I wear my Soundbrenner Pulse (on my right ankle) using a self-made construct from a 45mm O-ring and a rubber band because I find that more comfortable than the supplied plastic “wrist watch style” band.

From a guitar practice point of view, the Soundbrenner Pulse works fine for me – but maybe not for everyone. I get more distracted by the sound (or the light) of a Metronome and the trill is perfect for me. Another thing to mention us customer support – when I “complained” about the stiff charger cable, I got an immediate reaction from Soundbrenner asking what the problem – looks like they are rally caring what their customers want. I was looking for something like this for some time and I like what I got.

Fijne metronoom, super app

Bijzondere metronoom die je goed kan voelen. De gratis meegeleverde app is een van de betere metronoom apps. Werkt op IOS perfect, maar op android hapert de timing van de app soms, dus beter op IOS gebruiken. Verder top ding.
