The drum mic with an integrated preamp
The Shure Beta 98AMP/C is a miniature electret condenser microphone with an integrated preamplifier, designed for close-miking drums, percussion, brass, woodwinds, and other instruments in live and studio environments. Part of Shure's Beta microphone family, it reflects the company's longstanding philosophy of developing purpose-built microphones for virtually every major stage and studio application. The integrated preamp connects directly to any XLR input via phantom power, eliminating the need for a separate preamp module and simplifying the signal chain. A maximum SPL of 157.5dB handles kick drums, close-miked brass, and loud percussion without distortion. Shure's A75M Universal Microphone Mount attaches to drum rims, cymbal stands, instrument hardware, or standard microphone stands. A snap-fit windscreen and zippered bag are included as standard; 48V phantom power is required.

Capsule and construction
The Beta 98's electret condenser capsule covers 20Hz–20kHz with a frequency response tailored for drums and instruments – largely natural through the midrange, with a broad presence lift through 6–12kHz that adds cymbal clarity, brass brilliance, and the upper harmonic detail of woodwinds without becoming harsh. Self-noise is rated at 31dB SPL-A, which is entirely appropriate for the high-SPL environments this microphone is designed for, since the noise floor is rarely the limiting factor. The Shure Beta 98AMP/C's uniform cardioid pattern provides consistent off-axis rejection across the frequency range, keeping bleed from adjacent kit elements and stage sources under control. The flexible gooseneck allows precise capsule positioning without moving the mount itself.

The Shure Beta 98 AMP/C suits drummers, percussionists, brass and woodwind players, and engineers who need a compact, fixed-placement condenser that connects directly to a standard XLR input without additional hardware. The integrated preamp is its defining advantage: one cable from mount to mixing desk, with no separate module to mount, route, or misplace. On toms and snare, the high SPL ceiling and cardioid pattern combine to produce a detailed, isolated close‑mic signal. For brass and woodwinds, the extended high‑frequency response captures upper harmonics with an accuracy that dynamic mics cannot match. The A75M mounting system adapts equally well to drum hardware, percussion rigs, and regular instrument stands. About Shure
The American company Shure began developing microphones during the early 1930s and is one of the pioneers of the audio engineering sector. Models such as the 55 Unidyne – known to many as the "Elvis microphone" – and the SM57 and SM58 which appeared in the mid-1960s are still ubiquitous in live sound production today. Small changes, big differences
The Shure Beta 98AMP/C's cardioid pattern helps isolate individual elements, while the flexible gooseneck allows the capsule to be positioned precisely. At between 2.5 and 7.5cm above a tom or snare head, the Beta 98AMP/C captures attack and body with the upper-midrange and high-frequency detail that a dynamic microphone instead rolls off early. On cymbals, close placement with the A75M gives a bright, well-defined signal with natural attack. For brass, positioning 30–90cm from the bell on‑axis produces a clear, present sound; angling the bell 90° off‑axis gives a softer, mellower character. The enamel-coated metal construction and stainless steel inner grille withstand the physical demands of touring and repeated stage use. Like the rest of Shure's Beta family, the AMP/C is a tool for a specific task – and the integrated preamp makes that task simpler than a separate module ever could.
